Mount Makivka
Makivka is a mountain in the High Beskid about 8 km north of the town of Slavske in Lviv Oblast. Its height is usually given as 958 m; OpenStreetMap lists 933 m for the summit. The nearest villages are Rykiv and Tukhlia. Makivka is one of the most important places of Ukrainian military memory in the Carpathians.
How to get there
Our site has the route Tukhlia – Mount Makivka – Slavske, 23.2 km long. It passes close to the summit and links the mountain with two places that are easy to reach. Slavske has a railway station, so you can do the route without a car. Plan a full day and leave time to visit the memorial.
Water, shelter and safety
According to our map there is a camping spot about 500 m from the summit; there are no mapped springs nearby, so carry your own water. Slavske and Tukhlia are also convenient places to stay. The mountain is wooded, and in fog or at dusk it is easy to lose your way on forest tracks, so carry an offline map. Please behave respectfully at the memorial cemetery. In an emergency call 112 or 101; contacts of the nearest units are on our mountain rescue page.
Interesting facts
- From 29 April to 4 May 1915 fierce battles were fought on Makivka between the Legion of Ukrainian Sich Riflemen (seven companies of the 1st and 2nd battalions within the Austrian 55th Infantry Division) and numerically superior Russian forces.
- In the 1920s members of the UVO and later the OUN began placing crosses for those who fell for Ukraine's freedom near the central summit, and in the 1930s Ukrainian youth came here on mass pilgrimages.
- In 1998–1999 the Sich Riflemen cemetery was restored: 50 crosses were placed on the riflemen's graves, along with a monument to those who could not be identified.
