Verkhnya Hrabivnytsia, Arpad Line Bunker.

The bunker in the village of Verkhnia Hrabivnytsia is one of the best preserved monuments of the Second World War on the so-called Arpad Line.

The Arpad Line was a series of defense installations built in 1939-1944 that stretched for about 600 km along the main Carpathian ridge (from the Dukla Pass to the Yablunytsia Pass). The main goal was to protect Hungarian territories from Soviet troops. The labor force was Hungarian soldiers and their prisoners. The name of the defensive line comes from the name of the Ugric leader Arpad, whose conquests led to the creation of the Hungarian state.

The Arpad Line Bunker is the largest in Ukraine and one of the best preserved military objects of the Second World War on the defense line of the same name. It is located in the village of Verkhnii Hrabivnytsia in Zakarpattia. The bunker was dug at a depth of about 100 meters by Hungarian soldiers under the direction of the German military to protect themselves from the Red Army's advance.

In Soviet times, the bunker was listed as a civil defense facility for the so-called inviolable stockpiles (IS), which are used in critical situations. Modern studies of the walls show that some of the tunnels were bricked up at the time.

During 1991-2012, this historical monument was empty, or rather vandalized.

Today, local entrepreneurs are taking care of the bunker, and the underground premises are being restored to normal. It hosts a museum exhibition, information stands, as well as excursions and tastings of Transcarpathian wine.
