Kolyba of the Karpaty complex, Myhove

Myhove, Chernivtsi region, Ukraine

The Kolyba in Myhove is the restaurant of the Karpaty cottage complex on the main street of Myhove, Bukovyna’s ski resort in the Vyzhnytsia district. It is not an old shepherd’s hut but a modern timber restaurant in a Hutsul-Bukovynian style: a bright hall for 40–50 guests under a wooden ceiling painted with traditional ornament, shelves of clay pottery, sheaves of wheat on the tables, red beaded chandeliers and a large terrace looking out on forested slopes and ski runs. It is popular both with guests of the complex and with travellers who come to Myhove to ski in winter or walk in the hills in summer. On Google Maps it is one of the highest-rated places in the village.

What to try

The menu combines Ukrainian cooking with European dishes, but its most interesting part is the Bukovynian and Hutsul food you will not find in an ordinary café. Order banush with cracklings and bryndza, lyhanets – a potato dish filled with homemade curd cheese, served with porcini sauce and pulled pork – the Carpathian shpundra, pork braised with young beetroot, dried mushrooms, honey and smoked pear, and fried mamalyga with muzhdei, a roasted-garlic sauce, and smoked bryndza – a taste that recalls the nearby Bukovynian-Romanian borderland.

Among the “sorbanky”, as the soups are called here, are bograch, borshch with mushroom dumplings, mushroom soup and sauerkraut soup with smoked ribs. There are varenyky with salted cheese, cabbage rolls with mushroom sauce, blood sausage with braised cabbage, trout (pstruh) and carp from the grill, rabbit with fried kulesha and, for game lovers, venison with blackberry sauce and even beaver stewed with cherries. With beer or a fruit liqueur you can share a set of mini spreads with bryndza, salo and mushroom pâté, homemade sausage or pickled porcini. Sample prices from the menu – please check current prices at the restaurant: banush UAH 299, bograch UAH 309, lyhanets UAH 309, borshch with mushroom dumplings UAH 199, varenyky with salted cheese UAH 169.
