Gonchar Ceramics & Coffee Workshop, Kosiv

Kosiv, Ivano-Frankivsk region, Ukraine

A pottery where you drink coffee from cups made on site

Gonchar is a small ceramics and coffee workshop in central Kosiv run by the Chornyi family of potters. It brings together two things modern Kosiv is known for: a living pottery craft and cosy places you want to come back to. Coffee and tea are served in cups thrown on the wheel right here, and all the tableware is handmade, so even a simple morning coffee becomes a small introduction to Kosiv ceramics.

According to a local makers' directory, the studio's potter is Mykola; in the café you can see the workshop's output up close, buy finished pieces or arrange a custom order.

What you can do

  • Potter's wheel masterclass. Try raising your own cup or bowl from a lump of clay under a potter's guidance — the most popular option for anyone looking for a pottery class in Kosiv.
  • Buy ceramics — cups, plates and bowls made in the studio.
  • Order a custom piece — a tableware set or a gift.
  • Tea ceremony — an unhurried tea session with handmade ware.

The length and price of the masterclass, group size, and when pieces can be collected after firing should be checked in advance — the studio does not publish prices.

Who will enjoy it

The format suits a couple who want to spend an hour or two on a shared creative activity, a family with children, or a solo traveller looking for a quiet place between walks around Kosiv. Clay does not forgive haste, so a session at the wheel is also a good chance to slow down: to feel a shape gradually appear under your fingers and to understand how much work goes into every Kosiv bowl. A piece made with your own hands is the best souvenir of the Hutsul region.

Kosiv and pottery

For more than two centuries Kosiv has been one of the key pottery centres of the Hutsul region. Its painted ceramics, with characteristic yellow, green and brown designs of deer, riders, birds and flowers, are inscribed by UNESCO on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Traditional pieces were painted with a horn over white slip and then glazed. Contemporary makers such as Gonchar often work in a different style, with simple everyday forms, but keep the essential: tableware made by hand on the wheel, from clay to kiln.
