Khmilnyi Lev (“Hoppy Lion”) is a small independent brewery that has been working in Lviv since 2014. While many craft brewers chase extreme experiments, it chose the opposite path: brewing classic styles and getting them just right. The beer follows the Bavarian Reinheitsgebot purity law of 1516 — only water, malt and hops, with no spices, flavourings or forced carbonation. The brewery uses modern cylindro-conical tanks and picks its own malt, hops and process for each style.
Why go
The main reason is fresh beer straight from the brewery. At 30 Zhovkivska Street, in the building that houses the brewery, Khmilnyi Lev runs its own shop with taps and fridges: you can fill a bottle from the tap, buy bottled beer and ask the staff for advice. The beer goes to dozens of pubs, restaurants and shops in Lviv and the region, but next to the brewery it is at its freshest and the choice is widest. A good option for travellers who want to bring home real local beer rather than a souvenir.
What to try
- Unfiltered pale — an easy-drinking core beer with a soft malty taste.
- Unfiltered wheat — a traditional wheat beer the brewery regularly brings back.
- “Bahriane” dark unfiltered — with caramel and bready notes.
- Swedbeer Belgian Ale — a Belgian ale with fruity yeast aromas.
- Oatmeal stout — velvety, with coffee and chocolate notes.
- IPA California — American-style with a distinct hop bitterness.
Natural carbonation makes the beer softer and lighter, and stable recipes keep the taste consistent from batch to batch whatever the season — one of the brewery’s core values. The current line-up and new batches are easiest to check on Untappd and the brewery’s Facebook page.
Tip: unfiltered, unpasteurised beer is a living product and tastes best in the first days after filling. If you are taking it home, keep the bottles cool and out of the sun — a small cool bag helps on the road.
A little tradition
Lviv is one of Ukraine’s oldest brewing cities: brewers worked here in the Middle Ages, and an industrial brewery has operated since the 18th century. The craft wave of the 2010s brought small independent breweries back to the city, and Khmilnyi Lev was one of the first to bet on the classics. It takes part in craft beer festivals and tasting competitions.
