Yurashky Gingerbread Gallery, Lviv

Yurashky is a Lviv gallery of hand-decorated gingerbread at 14 Krakivska Street, a minute from Rynok Square. Shelves from floor to ceiling are filled with painted honey cakes: lions and townhouses, trams and angels, hearts, flowers, patriotic and seasonal designs. The workshop has been known in Lviv for more than ten years — in 2016 Yurashky even built the biggest gingerbread house, as local media reported. Today it is a shop, a small café and a masterclass space where adults and children decorate gingerbread with their own hands.

The gingerbread craft

Spiced honey gingerbread is an old treat of Lviv and Galician holidays, above all Christmas, when gingerbread decorated trees and was given to family. Yurashky continues this tradition in a modern form: the gingerbread is baked and then painted by hand with coloured icing, so every piece is slightly different. The gallery offers more than 170 kinds of gingerbread — from tiny figures to three-dimensional gingerbread houses — plus biscuits, candles and gift sets. Collections change with the season: in autumn pumpkins and bats appear for Halloween, in winter Christmas houses, angels and stars.

Gingerbread masterclasses

The best way to get to know the craft is to book a masterclass. Yurashky offers three formats:

• Gingerbread painting — 1 hour, UAH 400: create your own sweet design with icing.
• Building a 3D dream house — 1.5 hours, UAH 550: assemble a gingerbread house and decorate it to your taste.
• Gingerbread baking — 3 hours, UAH 800: the whole process from mixing the dough to finished, decorated gingerbread.

Each masterclass includes six icing colours and a drink of your choice — juice or caramel milk. Sessions suit both children and adults; book by phone or Telegram and the team will help you pick a time. For little ones there is often a table with colouring gingerbread by the entrance.

Tip: gingerbread is light and travels well, so it makes a convenient gift; ask for sturdy packaging for fragile houses. In December, before Christmas and New Year, the gallery is at its busiest — book masterclass places a few days ahead and come shopping in the morning.
