Mamyna Svitlytsia ("Mother's Parlour") is an embroidery salon and small folk-art gallery on Virmenska (Armenian) Street, one of Lviv's oldest and most atmospheric streets. It has been open since 2009 and from the start has followed a simple principle: it sells only hand embroidery on natural fabrics, made by Ukrainian craftswomen in the traditional manner. For travellers it is a place not only to buy a genuine vyshyvanka but also to see how ornaments differ from region to region — from the Hutsul and Boyko lands to Podillia and Volhynia.
What you will find in the salon
- Vyshyvanky for men, women and children — shirts, blouses, dresses and suits, plus matching family outfits.
- Home textiles — rushnyky (ritual towels), tablecloths, napkins, runners and embroidered cushions, including pieces for Easter such as embroidered basket covers.
- Folk costumes and old motifs recreated by contemporary craftswomen.
- Hutsul and Kosiv ceramics — painted bowls, jugs and candlesticks.
- Blown glass, artist metalwork and jewellery by well-known makers.
- Weaving and pysanky (painted Easter eggs) — traditional gifts that are easy to take home.
More than a shop
Mamyna Svitlytsia is also an exhibition space: it has hosted shows of Volhynian towels, historic Ukrainian costumes, shirts from Western Podillia, ex libris prints and works by families of folk artists. The salon takes part in city events — vyshyvanka shows on Vyshyvanka Day and Independence Day, ethno-fashion days, Kupala celebrations on Virmenska Street and Christmas carolling. With its tiled stove, embroidered towels on the walls and shelves full of textiles, the interior feels like visiting an old Lviv housewife at home.
A tradition you can take home
In Galicia and the Carpathians an embroidered shirt was never just clothing but a protective charm and a kind of family "passport": its colours, technique and ornament told you which region a person came from. Hutsul shirts feature fine geometry and bright tones, Boyko ones more restrained red-and-black patterns, and Podillia shirts richly embroidered sleeves. At Mamyna Svitlytsia you can see these differences first-hand by comparing pieces on a single shelf — a small ethnography lesson without museum showcases. A vyshyvanka or rushnyk from here is a meaningful gift that keeps the memory of your trip to Lviv for a long time.
How to choose a vyshyvanka
Hand embroidery is easy to recognise from the back: stitches are slightly uneven, knots and thread changes are visible, and the pattern "breathes". Ask the staff which region an ornament comes from and which technique was used — cross-stitch, satin stitch, nyzynka or cutwork. Handmade pieces cost more than machine embroidery, but such a shirt lasts for decades and is often handed down through the family. If you are looking for a shirt in a particular size or pattern, call ahead.
