Lviv Coffee Mining Manufacture (Lvivska Kopalnia Kavy) is one of the city's best-known coffee places, right on Rynok Square at no. 10, opposite the Town Hall. Its concept is a playful Lviv legend that coffee in Lviv is not imported but "mined" in the dungeons beneath Rynok Square. So there is a real "mine" here: brick cellars run like galleries under the townhouse, guests are handed miner's helmets with lamps and shown "coal faces" full of coffee beans, mine carts and "miners'" tools. The place belongs to the !FEST Holding of Emotions, which created many themed venues in the Old Town.

What to see and do

• Go down into the "mine". The underground part consists of brick corridors with atmospheric lighting and mining décor; visitors pose in helmets and "dig" for coffee. Lviv guides often bring groups here, and underground walking tours of the Old Town include the Coffee Mine as a stop.
• Try flaming coffee. The signature drink is coffee that the barista sets alight before serving, so it arrives with a small fire show. Classic espresso, filter coffee, signature coffee drinks and hot chocolate are also served.
• Sit in the covered courtyard. The townhouse's inner courtyard has a glass roof, greenery, chandeliers and vintage posters of Lviv races and events — one of the prettiest coffee spots in the centre, cosy even in the rain.
• Buy Lviv coffee. The shop sells its own coffee, whole bean and ground (blends such as "Lvivska", single origins and Colombian lots, drip bags), a coffee advent calendar, gift sets, tea, cocoa, chocolate, mugs and souvenirs. The same coffee can be ordered for delivery across Ukraine by Nova Poshta or picked up at 10 Rynok Square.

Coffee craft and tradition

Lviv is rightly called Ukraine's coffee capital: the first cafés appeared here under Austrian rule, and the "Viennese Café" on Svobody Avenue opened in 1829. The Mine plays with this tradition in a light-hearted way, but the coffee itself is serious — the place sells coffee under its own "Lviv Coffee Mining Manufacture" brand, and travel reviews often list it among the must-visit coffee stops in Lviv. To taste the bean itself, baristas suggest espresso or filter rather than milky drinks.

The Mine is especially popular with families and first-time visitors to Lviv: the descent into the cellars turns an ordinary coffee into a small adventure. It is quietest in the morning, right after opening at eight, when the cellars and courtyard are less crowded and photos come out without the throng. Packs of coffee make a handy souvenir: they travel well and will remind you of Lviv's streets back home.
