The Caramel Workshop (Maisternia Karameli) at 13 Serbska Street is a small confectionery in the very heart of Lviv where lollipops, toffee and marshmallows are made by hand right in front of visitors. It is the first and flagship shop of the chain of the same name, which later opened confectioneries in many Ukrainian cities and even abroad. But it is here, a few steps from Rynok Square, that you can best see hot sugar mass turn into striped sticks, colourful pillow candies and whimsical lollipops.
The caramel show: what you can see
Behind the glass of the work table the confectioners knead hot caramel like dough, pull it, fold it and twist ropes of different colours, then cut them into sweets with a pattern inside. The process takes a few minutes and is repeated throughout the day, and adults watch it with as much delight as children. The shop window is an attraction in itself: a bright model of Lviv townhouses and the Town Hall that passers-by love to photograph.
The workshop stresses that it uses only natural ingredients — sugar, glucose syrup and fruit extracts, with no artificial colours or flavourings. The range includes more than 25 flavours of hard caramel, plus marshmallows, toffee, sherbet and jelly sweets. Caramel is also made to order — with lettering, logos or in gift packaging.
Caramel masterclass
The highlight for families is the children's caramel-making masterclass. Young participants become "caramel makers", shape their own lollipop under a confectioner's guidance and take it home together with a caramel-master certificate. According to visitors, the session lasts about an hour and should be booked a day or two ahead. Booking in Lviv: +380 97 417 10 20. The workshop also runs mobile masterclasses for birthdays, corporate events or weddings in and around Lviv (+380 67 218 13 00) and sells masterclass gift certificates.
What to buy
- striped caramel by weight in fruit flavours — from classic strawberry and lemon to mint and sour mixes;
- big lollipops on a stick shaped like hearts, animals and flowers;
- toffee, marshmallows, sherbet and jelly sweets;
- gift jars and bags — a sweet souvenir from Lviv instead of a fridge magnet.
Tip: caramel does not like heat and humidity, so on a summer trip keep your purchases in the shade, and at home in a closed jar.
The workshop combines easily with other sweet addresses of the Old Town: Lviv Handmade Chocolate is on the same Serbska Street, and the Yurashky gingerbread gallery is nearby on Krakivska. Such a "sweet route" is easy to walk in half a day, and children will remember it for a long time. If you are booked for a masterclass, come a little early to watch the confectioners at work behind the glass first.
