Hornád River
The Hornád is a river of Slovakia and Hungary, a left-bank tributary of the Slaná (Sajó) in the Tisza basin and Slovakia's fifth-longest river. It is 286 km long, 193 km of them in Slovakia and 93 km in Hungary; Polish sources put the basin at 4,403 km², Ukrainian sources and Wikidata at 5,500 km². The Hornád rises below the Low Tatras, flows east through Spiš, cuts a canyon through the Slovak Paradise, turns south to Košice and crosses the border into Hungary. Its mean flow is 30.9 m³/s, the highest recorded 689 m³/s.
The course: from source to mouth
The spring of the Hornád lies at about 972 m at the south-eastern foot of the Krahulec hill, about 3 km west of the village of Vikartovce, where the Low Tatras meet the Kozie chrbty; only a kilometre away flows the Čierny Váh, already in the Váh basin. The river first runs as a stream through the wide Hornád Basin, gathering tributaries, and beyond Hrabušice enters the Slovak Paradise. Here, from the mouth of the Veľká Biela voda to Smižany, it has cut into the limestone bedrock to form a canyon about 16 km long.
Leaving the hills, the Hornád flows through Spišská Nová Ves, Spišské Vlachy and Krompachy. At Margecany it receives its largest right-bank tributary, the Hnilec, and together they fill the Ružín reservoir; below lies the smaller Malá Lodina reservoir. At Kysak the river turns sharply south, flows through Košice and further down receives its largest left-bank tributary, the Torysa, and the Olšava. For about 10 km the Hornád meanders along the Slovak–Hungarian border, then in Hungary, between the Zemplén (Tokaj–Slanské) hills and the Cserehát, it reaches the Slaná about 20 km south of Miskolc. Other tributaries are the Bystrá, Belá, Svinka, Lodina and Margecianka.

- Kláštorisko – Carthusian Monastery Ruins — on the plateau above the canyon.
- Suchá Belá Gorge — one of the best-known gorges of the Slovak Paradise, starting near the Hornád valley.
- Spiš Museum in Spišská Nová Ves (Provincial House) — in the town on the river.

On the water: rafting and kayaking
Boating through the Hornád gorge is allowed only under the national park's strict rules. Trips are permitted and provided by the Slovak Paradise National Park Administration: the season runs from 1 May to 31 October (in 2026 it also opened on 1 May), at most 70 one- or two-seat boats may pass the gorge per day, and rafting is not allowed. The 11.75 km waterway starts at Hrabušice – Mýto and ends at the Čingov tourist centre below the Ihla rock; there is a charge. Before going on the water check the Hornád level on the Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute website.
Nature and safety
The Hornád gorge has been a national nature reserve of 290 ha since 1964, and the whole valley in the Slovak Paradise lies within the national park. Until 1974 the canyon could not be walked end to end; then the Mountain Rescue Service completed a path with steps, chains and footbridges over the water — today one of the park's most attractive routes. The Hornád is home to Slovakia's rarest fish, the Danube salmon (Hucho hucho). The river carries most water in spring during snowmelt and least in autumn; below Ružín the flow depends on releases from the dam. On the path above the water take care on wet staples and chains. Emergency numbers: 112, in the mountains HZS 18 300.
