Historical Museum – Palace in Dukla
The Historical Museum – Palace in Dukla (Muzeum Historyczne – Pałac w Dukli) occupies the main building of an 18th-century palace and park complex, the most imposing building in this small Subcarpathian town. Dukla lies on the old trade route to Hungary, near the Dukla Pass – the lowest and most convenient crossing of the Carpathians – which is why two great battles were fought here in the 20th century. The museum is run by Krosno County.
Around the mid-16th century a Renaissance castle stood here. In 1636–1638 its new owner, Franciszek Bernard Mniszech, rebuilt it within bastion fortifications, and in the 18th century Jerzy August Mniszech and his wife Maria Amalia née Brühl turned the fortress into a late-Baroque French-style residence "between courtyard and garden", with a formal park, sculptures and a theatre. In 1764–1778 the palace was a notable centre of cultural and political life in Poland; Tadeusz Kościuszko visited in 1775. In the late 19th century the Męciński family remodelled it, and from 1925 it belonged to the Tarnowskis. After damage in the Second World War the building was gradually restored. The museum began with a 1964 exhibition for the 20th anniversary of the Battle of Dukla; it became independent in 1972 and has had its present name since 1991. In 2012 the complex was returned to the Tarnowski heirs, and the museum leases the main building and part of the courtyard.
What to see
- "Dukla and the Palace" – a chasuble with the Trąby coat of arms (c. 1540), old views of the town in photographs and postcards, portraits of the owners and guests, the 1875 rebuilding plans, books from the palace library stamped "Dukla", porcelain, period furniture and items connected with St John of Dukla.
- The reconstructed studio of Franciszek Starowieyski – painter, graphic artist and stage designer, born in 1930 in nearby Bratkówka; a new permanent exhibition.
- Military exhibitions – the Carpathian and Gorlice operations of 1914–1915, September 1939 at the Dukla Pass, the Carpathian–Dukla Operation of 8 September – 30 November 1944 (the largest WWII battle in the Polish mountains), weapons of the armies that fought in the Carpathians, and an exhibition on the Home Army in the Krosno region. Most exhibits come from the surrounding battlefields.
- Open-air heavy weapons display in the courtyard – a 152 mm gun-howitzer, anti-aircraft guns, a ZIS-3 divisional gun, a T-34-85 tank, a BM-13 "Katyusha" rocket launcher on a ZIS-6 chassis and an ISU-152 self-propelled gun.
The museum also holds temporary exhibitions, lectures and historical weapons shows.
Practical information
The palace stands on road 19 (Trakt Węgierski), next to Dukla's market square; the Slovak border at Barwinek is about 20 km away and Krosno about 25 km. Driving is easiest; buses from Krosno stop in Dukla. The museum is open daily, until 15:00 in winter and 16:30 in summer; a standard ticket costs 14 zł and there is a family ticket (details in the "At a glance" box). Allow 1–1.5 hours for the palace and the courtyard. The open-air heavy equipment is a hit with children, and for a deeper look at military history you can book a guide.
Nearby: trails and peaks
The museum combines well with a trip to the Dukla Pass: on the Slovak side there is Dukla Pass: memorial, war cemetery and lookout tower, and on the way to the border the Museum of Lemko Culture in Zyndranowa. Seven kilometres north is the Museum of the Oil and Gas Industry in Bóbrka, and the Main Trail of Beskidy passes 3.5 km from the town as the crow flies.
