Dukla Pass: memorial, war cemetery and observation tower
Remembering the Carpathian–Dukla Operation
In autumn 1944 the Dukla Pass (Duklianský priesmyk) on the Slovak–Polish border above the village of Vyšný Komárnik became the scene of one of the largest mountain battles of the Second World War. The Carpathian–Dukla Operation was meant to force a way across the Carpathians to help the Slovak National Uprising. Between 8 September and 27 October 1944 some 21,000 Soviet and 1,800 Czechoslovak soldiers fell here — Czechs, Slovaks, Rusyns and others, including men from Subcarpathian Ruthenia and north-eastern Slovakia. The battlefield and memorials have been a national cultural monument since 1961 and are cared for by the Military History Museum’s Svidník department.
What to see
- The Memorial of the 1st Czechoslovak Army Corps (1949, architect Josef Grus) — a 28 m pylon symbolising the thrust through the border defences, with a columbarium holding soil from all the corps’ battlefields and reliefs of its route from Buzuluk to Prague. Since 1964 the bronze group “I Accuse” by Ján Kulich has stood here.
- The military cemetery, where 565 members of the corps are buried. The bronze plaques of the colonnade bear the names of 1,265 fallen; most of their graves are on the Polish side, in Dukla and Nowosielce.
- The Dukla observation tower, 52 m high (1974), on the site of General Ludvík Svoboda’s observation post at 550 m, with views over the battlefield on both sides of the border and audiovisual information in the hall.
- The Avenue of Dukla Heroes with busts of 15 participants of the operation, the “Broken Heart” memorial where General Jaroslav Vedral-Sázavský was killed (6 October 1944), and a sculpture of a sapper’s hand defusing a mine.
- The open-air military museum (since 1959) between Kapišová and the border: combat equipment, restored artillery positions and bunkers, the command post of the 3rd Czechoslovak Brigade, and the “Valley of Death” (Údolie smrti) — T-34 tanks near Kapišová, Kružlová and Nižná Pisaná recalling the tank battles of 25–27 October 1944.
Practical information
The memorial stands by the main road from Svidník to the border, near the former Vyšný Komárnik – Barwinek crossing, so it is easy to reach by car; parking is nearby. The memorial and cemetery are accessible all year, and the tower opens from 1 May to 31 October: tickets are sold until 16:30 and the barrier of the tower car park closes at 17:00. The tower is paid (prices per the museum’s current list; tickets can also be bought online); children under 15 only with an adult. Access to the terrace may be restricted in strong wind or storms. Organised groups of 30 or more are advised to announce their visit at least 7 days ahead.
Combine the trip with the Military History Museum’s central exhibition in Svidník, “Military History of Slovakia 1914–1945”, with its diorama of the fighting for the pass. Svidník also has the 37 m Red Army memorial (1954), beside which more than 9,000 Soviet soldiers lie in four mass graves, and a park of combat equipment next to it. This is a place of remembrance and burial, so please behave quietly and respectfully.
Nearby
On the way from Svidník, stop at the UNESCO wooden churches of Ladomirová and Bodružal. Further east is the Andy Warhol Museum in Medzilaborce, and to the west Bardejov.
