Wooden Church of St Michael the Archangel, Ladomirová
A church built without nails
Ladomirová is a Rusyn village north of the town of Svidník in the Prešov Region, on the road to the Dukla Pass. On its edge, behind a wooden fence with a little shingle roof, stands the Greek Catholic Church of St Michael the Archangel — one of the architecturally most valuable and most representative wooden churches of the Eastern rite in Slovakia. It was built in 1742 following old carpentry tradition, without a single metal nail.
The church is a log building in three parts — sanctuary, nave and narthex, aligned from west to east — topped by three towers with onion domes and three crosses. The Ukrainian Wikipedia classes it as Lemko type while noting an influence of Hutsul building unusual for the region; its stepped tented roof became the model for the churches in neighbouring Miroľa and Hunkovce. During the Second World War the village, the parish and the church were badly damaged, as were several valuable icons; the church was repaired in 1946. In 1957 it was damaged again by a storm — an old lime tree fell on the building — and was restored once more in 1958. In 1968 the church was declared a national cultural monument, and on 7 July 2008 it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List together with other wooden churches of the Slovak Carpathians.
Ladomirová is also known for another chapter of history: in the 1920s Orthodox émigré monks from the former Russian Empire, including from Ukraine, settled here and founded a monastery with a printing house; after the Second World War the community ceased to exist. During the 1946 repairs the restorers removed the wall between the nave and the narthex, so the interior is now more open than its builders intended.
What to see
- The five-tier iconostasis from the mid-18th century, gradually restored in 1996–2006. The main row holds icons of St Nicholas, the crowned Virgin Hodegetria, Christ the Teacher and the Archangel Michael, the church’s patron; above are the feast row with the Last Supper in the centre, the apostles’ row with Christ the High Priest and the prophets’ row with the Crucifixion.
- The Royal Doors with six medallions — the four Evangelists and the Annunciation.
- The separate bell tower of post construction with a pyramidal shingle roof; it once held four bells, one of them from 1742, and now has three.
Practical information
Ladomirová lies right next to Svidník, so the easiest way is by car from Svidník, combining the church with the town’s museums and the memorials of the Dukla operation. The churchyard is open to visitors, but you can get inside only during a service or by arrangement with the Greek Catholic parish or the guide. No fixed hours or prices are officially published (as of October 2026); visitors usually leave a voluntary donation. This is a living place of worship: dress modestly, speak quietly, take photos only with permission and do not walk around during a service.
Nearby
Not far away is another UNESCO wooden church in Bodružal, and to the north, near the Polish border, the memorial and battlefield of the Dukla Pass. To the west are medieval Bardejov and the wooden church in Hervartov.
