Museum of Ukrainian Culture in Svidník

Centrálna 258, 089 01 Svidník, Slovakia

The Museum of Ukrainian Culture (Múzeum ukrajinskej kultúry) in Svidník is Slovakia's oldest specialised museum of a national minority and the main place of memory of the Rusyn-Ukrainians of the Prešov region. Today it is part of the Slovak National Museum (SNM) and has three exhibitions: the cultural-historical one in the main building in the town centre, an open-air museum, and the Dezider Milly Gallery. This page is about the main building.

The museum was founded in Prešov in 1956; it later became the Ukrainian department of the regional museum, then operated in Krásny Brod, and in 1964 it moved permanently to Svidník. Its researchers have studied the traditional culture of the Carpathians for decades, and since 1965 the museum has published its Scientific Proceedings (28 annual volumes in 30 books so far); it also takes part in international projects researching the folk culture of the Carpathians and neighbouring lands. The exhibition is housed in a two-storey neoclassical building from the 1890s on the central pedestrian street; a large mosaic panel stands in front of the entrance.

What to see

The three-level exhibition, covering 1,700 m², tells the story of north-eastern Slovakia from the Neolithic to the 1980s, with special attention to how different peoples lived side by side here. Sections:

  • "Man and Nature" – how mountains, forests and climate shaped the local way of life.
  • "In the Footsteps of Ancestors" – the history of the region up to 1918: portraits of Prince Fedir Koriatovych and Count György Drugeth, models of Zborov Castle and the Krásny Brod monastery, and the oldest written monuments – the 14th-century Spiš Cyrillic Gospel fragments and the Ostružnica Gospel of 1492.
  • "Traditional Folk Culture" – occupations, crafts, folk dress, woodcarving and other forms of folk art.
  • "The Czechoslovak Period" – Ukrainian life after 1918: schools, book publishing, cultural societies.

The museum also holds temporary exhibitions and runs educational programmes and creative workshops for children and groups. Every year the town amphitheatre next to the open-air museum hosts the Festival of Rusyn-Ukrainian Culture in Slovakia, so in summer Svidník is the best place to see this culture alive – with songs, dances and folk costumes.

Practical information

Svidník lies on road I/21, which runs north from Prešov to the Dukla Pass and the Polish border (the Vyšný Komárnik – Barwinek crossing). There is no railway in the town, so the easiest way is by car or by bus from Prešov or Bardejov; the museum stands on Centrálna Street in the pedestrian zone. The exhibition is open Tuesday to Sunday (weekdays from 8:30, weekends from 10:00, until 16:00) and a standard ticket costs €4; refugees from Ukraine enter free of charge. A visit takes 1–1.5 hours, longer with a guide (extra charge). Photography is allowed for a small separate fee. If you have a whole day, the combined ticket for all three exhibitions is better value: the open-air museum is a few minutes' drive away, next to the town amphitheatre.

Nearby: trails and peaks

The waymarked route Pred Čuntavou – Dukliansky Pass passes through Svidník and leads to the 1944 battle sites on the border. A shorter option for a walk is the Svidník – Baňa path. After the museum, see the two other sites of the same institution – the Svidník open-air museum with the 1766 Church of St Paraskeva and the Dezider Milly Gallery with icons from the 16th–18th centuries – and, 5 km away, the Wooden Church of St Michael the Archangel, Ladomirová, a UNESCO site.
