Military History Museum in Svidník
The Military History Museum in Svidník (Vojenské historické múzeum – Múzejné oddelenie Svidník) is a branch of the Slovak Military History Museum, which belongs to the Military Historical Institute in Bratislava. It continues the tradition of the Dukla Museum founded in 1965; the present building on Bardejovská Street opened on 4 October 1969. Its collections number more than 10,600 items, and the museum specialises in the military history of the region – from the First World War in the Eastern Carpathians to the liberation of Slovakia in 1944–1945.
Svidník lies near the Dukla Pass, where the Carpathian-Dukla operation – one of the bloodiest battles in the Carpathians – was fought in autumn 1944. Next to the museum stands the Soviet Army memorial with a war cemetery (1950–1954): a 37-metre travertine pylon and four mass graves in which more than 9,000 soldiers are buried.
What to see
The central exhibition, "Military History of Slovakia 1914–1945", was renewed in 2011 and has three thematic parts:
- The First World War – the fighting in the Eastern Carpathians in 1914–1915, the offensive of General Brusilov's Russian 8th Army and the consequences of the war for north-eastern Slovakia. Exhibits include uniforms of the Czechoslovak legionaries in Russia, France and Italy and of Austro-Hungarian soldiers and officers, and the heavy machine guns Maxim model 1910 and Schwarzlose model 1907/12.
- The interwar period – from the birth of Czechoslovakia in 1918 to its break-up in March 1939, the building of the army and the famous small arms designed by Václav Holek.
- The Second World War – the largest part: the background, course and outcome of the Carpathian-Dukla operation and the liberation of Slovakia in 1944–1945, uniforms of German, Soviet and Czechoslovak soldiers, including those of Kirill Moskalenko, commander of the Soviet 38th Army, and Ludvík Svoboda, commander of the 1st Czechoslovak Army Corps.
Between the parts is a room with a panoramic diorama of the battles for the Dukla Pass (by Mikuláš and Jarmila Dico) and a small cinema showing a documentary film about the operation. Here you will also find the original 1925 border post from the Vyšný Komárnik – Barwinek crossing. Touch screens give information in Slovak and English.
The open-air Combat Equipment Park (1971–1974, renewed in 2023–2024) has 17 exhibits: a Lisunov Li-2 transport aircraft, a BM-13 "Katyusha" rocket launcher, a T-34/85 tank, an SD-100 self-propelled gun, howitzers, anti-tank and anti-aircraft guns and an armoured personnel carrier.
Practical information
From Svidník bus station the museum is a few minutes' walk: go to the end of the pedestrian zone, cross the main road, turn right towards Bardejov at the roundabout and follow the pavement for about 200 metres. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday (December–March weekdays only), and admission costs a symbolic €1. The exhibition takes about an hour; allow another half hour for the equipment park – children usually like it best. Organised groups of 30 or more are advised to announce their visit at least a week in advance.

The Pred Čuntavou – Dukliansky Pass route passes the museum and leads to the battle sites on the border; on the pass itself is Dukla Pass: memorial, war cemetery and observation tower. A shorter walk is Svidník – Baňa. In town, also visit the Museum of Ukrainian Culture in Svidník and its open-air museum.
