Browar Dukla: craft brewery and brewpub on Dukla market square

ul. Rynek 18, 38-450 Dukla (pub); browar: Cergowa 301, 38-450 Dukla, Poland

Dukla is an old small town at the foot of Mount Cergowa, on the historic trade route from Poland to Hungary over the Dukla Pass. Here, at the gateway to the Beskid Niski, a small craft brewery — Browar Dukla — has worked since 2014. Its first mash was brewed in January 2015, and since then it has been one of the few craft breweries in Podkarpackie that brews and sells its beer in the same little town.

The brewery stands in the village of Cergowa on the edge of Dukla. The kit is a 5-hectolitre stainless-steel-and-copper brewhouse, six 10 hl fermenters and a bottling line filling several hundred bottles an hour. The brewer, who started out as a homebrewer himself, works with both classic and new-wave styles, and the brewery says it cares about “beer education” — it runs brewing demonstrations.

Why go

  • Taste fresh beer from the tap in the brewery’s own pub right on Dukla’s market square.
  • See how beer is made — the brewery runs brewing demonstrations; arrange a visit to the brewhouse by phone in advance.
  • Hear live music: the brewery pub is a well-known concert venue in the region, with regular rock, folk and reggae gigs.
  • Buy bottled beer to take away or order from the brewery’s online shop.

What to taste and buy

The beer names sound like characters from an adventure novel. Over the years the brewery has made “Mad Alchemist” (Szalony Alchemik, American IPA), “Mysterious Rider” (session IPA), “Wild Loner” (American Amber Ale), “Beautiful Stranger” (single-hop Amarillo American Pale Ale), “The Last Righteous Man” (wheat beer), “Little Black” (cream stout), “Miss Summer” (summer ale) and “Oak Maiden” — a light grodziskie made from oak-smoked wheat malt, an old Polish style rarely found today. The taps rotate, so ask at the pub what is on.

The brewery pub is also a restaurant serving pizza, fish and regional dishes, so it works for families and after a walk on Cergowa.
