Church of Peter and Paul, Irshava

The Peter and Paul Church in Irshava, Zakarpattia, was built in 1825 on the site where a wooden church used to stand. At first it was a Greek Catholic church, but later it passed into the hands of Orthodox believers. Nowadays, Catholics come to worship here again. In 1939, the church was decorated with a 900-kilogram bell.

The wooden church was mentioned in 1797, although both the parish and the church were here much earlier. In 1748, there were only 30 Greek Catholics, as many people converted to the Reformed faith, and by the beginning of the 20th century, there were 834.

The current church is a neat brick basilica built by Fr. Petro Deshko on the site of the previous old wooden church, which in 1797 was mentioned as poor, covered with straw; the same was the headlight. Construction began in 1802.

In 1937, through the efforts of the vicar, Fr. Ivan Kampov, a 900-kilogram bell was purchased for 22 thousand Czechoslovak crowns. Significant repairs took place in 1969 under the priest Ivan Petrushka, when the artist O. Selivanov repainted the mural. The last renovation in 1997 was organized by priest Vasyl Ihnat, curator Ivan Zvonar, and cashier Vasyl Petryshche.

Recently, the church has undergone two major renovations. In 1969, the artist Selivanov painted new wall paintings.

The Church of the Supreme Apostles Peter and Paul is located in the city center, within walking distance of the railway station.
