Karpatskyi Buivil Buffalo Farm, Vynohradiv

Vynohradiv, Zakarpattia region, Ukraine

Karpatskyi Buivil ("Carpathian Buffalo") is the first and largest buffalo farm in Zakarpattia. On the outskirts of Vynohradiv, among lowland pastures at the foot of volcanic hills, almost 130 Carpathian buffaloes live here. For travellers it is a rare chance to see these powerful yet remarkably calm animals up close, hear the story of how they were saved and taste real buffalo mozzarella made in Ukraine.

The Carpathian buffalo: a living heritage

Buffaloes were kept in Zakarpattia for centuries: the hardy animals pulled carts, ploughed fields and gave rich, nourishing milk. By the second half of the 20th century very few remained, and the breed came close to extinction. The farm near Vynohradiv has become one of the main centres of its revival: the team works on breeding the herd and improving its living conditions, and visitors can help too, for example by buying a bale of hay to feed the buffaloes.

What to do at the farm

  • Farm tour. You will hear about the buffaloes' temperament and habits, how much hay an adult animal eats (one and a half to two bales a day) and how buffalo milk differs from cow's milk. You can see the animals in the pasture and at the feeding stalls.
  • Tasting. A set of eight buffalo-milk products is the best way to understand why mozzarella di bufala is so prized by food lovers.
  • Farm shop. It sells mozzarella balls and baby mozzarella, ricotta, kliahanyi (traditional rennet cheese), semi-hard cheese with fenugreek, cottage cheese, sour cream and cooked condensed milk, plus gift sets and souvenirs.

The farm happily welcomes families with children and organised groups; travel agencies get special terms. If you cannot make the trip, the farm ships its products (dispatch every Tuesday and Thursday), and gift certificates are sold on its website.

From Khust it is 29 km, around 30–40 minutes: take the main road towards Mukachevo, turn left in the village of Velyka Kopania and follow your navigator. Buses run to Vynohradiv from Uzhhorod, Mukachevo, Berehove and Khust, and a taxi is the easiest way from town to the farm.
