Chateau Chizay: Wine Tasting and the Chiz Winemaker's Museum, Berehove

Berehove, Zakarpattia region, Ukraine

Chateau Chizay is a large winery on the northern edge of Berehove, in the historic Chizay estate, and one of the most popular stops on any wine tour of Transcarpathia. Founded in 1995 as the first private winery of independent Ukraine, it now has more than 270 hectares of its own vineyards, a modern production facility, cellars holding thousands of barrels, and a visitor area with a museum and tasting room open all year round.

What you can do

Visits are by advance booking only, but there are several formats to choose from:

  • Classic tasting — a walk around the chateau grounds, the Chiz Winemaker's Museum, a visit to the cellar with aged wines and a tasting led by a professional sommelier. About 1.5 hours, 395 UAH.
  • Premium tasting — exclusive signature wines only, award winners at international competitions; 495 UAH.
  • Short tour — grounds, cellar and museum without tasting, 30–40 minutes, 60 UAH.
  • For children and non-drinkers — a "tasting" of natural grape juice, 199 UAH.

There are also themed events — the Chizay Wine Run through the vineyards, yoga, art and Nordic-walking sessions among the vines (for groups). The chateau is pet-friendly: well-behaved pets are welcome.

The Chiz Winemaker's Museum

The estate takes its name from Chiz, a townsman who owned vineyards here in the 13th century. The museum named after him has four halls covering viticulture, winemaking, the history of wine in Transcarpathia and the story of the chateau itself. Exhibits include old presses, grape knives, an anti-phylloxera syringe, carrying baskets, photographs of early vine growers and archive labels from the early 20th century proving that Transcarpathian wine was known across Europe. One section tells of the Soviet anti-alcohol campaign and the region's winemaking revival.

Wines to try

The range combines classics — Cabernet, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Merlot — with varieties rare in Ukraine: Cserszegi, Gewürztraminer, Blaufränkisch, Muscat, Furmint. The winery's calling card is Troyanda Karpat (Rose of the Carpathians), made to a 1969 recipe; the sparkling wines and the Pinot Noir rosé are also worth a try.

How to get there

Tip before you go

At weekends and in the holiday season groups fill up quickly, so book a few days ahead. If you are driving, choose the juice tasting or take wines home — they are sold in the winery shop on site.
