Church of St. Nicholas, Busk

TheChurch of St. Nicholas in Busk, which appeared shortly before the revolution, was built by the city's Orthodox community at their own expense between 1914 and 1938 by one of the most famous architects of the early twentieth century, Yevhen Nahirnyi, and is located near the city's ancient market. For a long time, this church was the only one in the city.

This brick building is cruciform in plan, with faceted side frames, a rectangular nave, and an elongated faceted presbytery. The architect also designed faceted crosses, and the church was to be surrounded by shingle-covered porches. However, during the construction, the dormers were lowered and the sacristy was not completed with octagons and domes. The church did not stand for long in its original form. During the Second World War, the roofs and dome burned down and were later replaced with simple tent roofs. All the details of the architectural decoration that defined the originality of the building disappeared from the walls.

In 1987, the church was decorated with a simple cement spray. In the early twenty-first century, a group of architects led by Ivan Mohytych found the original design of the church, and it was then that it became possible to recreate the original appearance of the church, including its lost elements. In order to recreate the elements of wooden architecture in stone, it was necessary to attract significant financial support from sponsors, so the project never started.

Today, the church has an iconostasis and a tetrapod, and the churchyard is decorated with garden vases made by the rector of the church himself. In 2008, a stone gate-bell tower was built here.

St. Nicholas Church in Busk is a functioning church, belongs to the diocese of the UGCC, and is an architectural monument of local importance.
