Treat it accordingly. Now let's look at specific examples: how can a tampon be useful? You will be surprised at how many hidden possibilities it contains.
1. Wound Dressing
Tampons are sterile. Their packaging is airtight and waterproof. They are designed to absorb as much liquid as possible. All of this makes a tampon an excellent material for emergency bandaging. It is known that tampons were even used for the initial treatment of gunshot wounds during combat - if no other medical equipment was available.
2. Primitive Water Filter
Of course, a tampon filter won't save you from heavy metals and chemical contaminants. But it will do a great job of purifying water from impurities and small particles. If the water in the only available source is dirty, muddy, with small debris - make a simple filter from a plastic bottle and a shredded tampon.
Insert the tampon into the neck of the cut bottle. Make a small hole in the cap, then pour in the dirty water.

3. Fire Starter
It is no secret that cotton ignites easily. From one tampon, if properly fluffed, you can get 3-4 small piles of material for starting a fire.
And most importantly, as we mentioned, the tampon is packaged airtight, meaning your tinder will always be dry. If you pour gasoline or fire starter mix on it, it will catch fire even faster.
4. Straw Filter for Drinking from a Stream
Some tampons are additionally packaged in a plastic container with a straw. We won't specify why this was originally done; we are interested in how it can be used.
If you don't have time to properly filter the water using the method described above, you can make a straw filter and drink directly from the water source. Place part of the shredded tampon in its plastic box, slightly tamp it down, and attach the straw on top:
Let’s repeat: this method will not purify water from chemical and biological contaminants, but if there are no other options - the tampon will at least provide mechanical filtration.
5. Wick for a Candle
The pull string of the tampon (the string in the center) can serve as a wick for an improvised candle. In the photo below, animal fat was used as a filler:
After the string soaked in fat and was successfully lit, the candle burned for another 20 minutes. And part of the string was still left; only the fat burned away.
6. Rope
The aforementioned pull string can also serve as a rope. Of course, it’s not a marine rope, but nevertheless, the strength of such a rope is quite decent.
In the photo, the string was used to set a trap for small game. In general, there can be many cases where a small, thin, but sufficiently strong rope is needed.
7. Dart
Darts have served faithfully for centuries to anyone who had to survive in harsh wilderness conditions. In skilled hands, this is a deadly weapon.
To make the simplest, lightest dart for hunting small rodents, lizards, amphibians, and even birds, make "feathers" from the tampon. You can secure it with the same pull string-rope.
8. Making a Natural Water Basin
It’s not easy to find a container for water in nature. And sometimes it can be vital. You can make such an improvised pot using a tampon, or rather, part of it:
Take an empty plastic applicator from the tampon, blow on the coals on a piece of log. Burn out a container of the appropriate size. The author took about 30 minutes to create a container that holds 2 cups of water.
9. Waterproof Bag for Matches
In damp and humid conditions, it is very important to keep matches and tinder dry. The bag in which the tampon is packaged is perfect for these purposes; it is made of waterproof material and is airtight.
Place matches or other small items you want to protect from moisture inside. Then tightly tie the open end with the pull string from the center of the tampon:
10. Float
A tampon can also be useful for fishing in extreme conditions. You can make a float from it.
When you have rope and a homemade hook on hand, the fishing rod is almost ready. You just need to construct the float. Take the tampon packaging. Open it, tightly tie the edge. To keep the air inside from escaping, you can add a little cotton from the tampon to the place of tying. Tie it to our "line":
