The hotel "Citadel Inn" is located in Fort II, which defended the eastern approaches to the Lviv Citadel, built by the Austrian government in 1850-1856. The construction of this fortress coincided with a turbulent period for the multinational Austrian Empire, which faced the threat of territorial disintegration due to internal uprisings. To ensure its future security, Vienna ordered the construction of Citadels in every capital city to instill fear in the local population and suppress any uprisings. In the capital of the Bohemian Kingdom, Prague, the Vyšehrad Castle was rebuilt for the needs of the Citadel, and in the free city of Kraków - the former residence of Polish kings - Wawel. Only in two capital cities of the empire were new, modern fortifications built according to the latest technology - the Citadel in Budapest on St. Gellért Hill and a completely new one in Lviv on "Turkish Heights". Only in the city of Lviv did the presence of a wide plateau allow for the grand realization of all the latest engineering and architectural ideas of leading architects from Vienna. A new type of defensive structure used in the design of the Lviv Citadel was the Maximilian Tower, which today welcomes guests to the city. This type of defensive tower was invented by the Austrian Archduke Maximilian d'Este and was first tested in the defense of the newly created fortress in Linz, Upper Austria. They could then be found in all contemporary Habsburg possessions, from the Italian city of Verona, the port city of Venice, to Kraków and the Lviv Citadel. The Maximilian Tower in Lviv is the best example of military architecture from the early 19th century in Europe, making this fortress even more unique and interesting for its visitors.
