Zirka z Neba Pottery Studio, Lviv

Lviv, Lviv region, Ukraine

Zirka z Neba ("A Star from the Sky") is a small, cosy pottery studio in Lviv where people come to sit at a potter's wheel for the first time, make their own mug or paint a plate for home. The studio has been running since 2007 and is now a veteran-owned business: its owner, ceramicist Yurii (Yurko) Danylyshyn, did not give up pottery even during the war, a story covered by local Lviv media. The shelves are lined with pieces waiting to be fired, and the air smells of clay and the tea guests are often offered.

What you can do

  • Pottery and hand-building workshop. Guided by the potter, you work at the wheel or shape clay by hand — a mug, bowl, plate, candleholder, even a coffee pour-over. Reviewers stress that the instructors help but don't do the work for you, so the piece is really yours. After the class it is dried, fired and glazed; the finished piece can be collected in about two weeks.
  • Pottery painting. If you'd rather not get your hands covered in clay, you can paint a ready-made mug or plate; finished pieces are ready in about a week.
  • Formats for any group. One-to-one sessions, dates for two, birthdays and team events for up to 10 people, family sessions with children and on-site workshops elsewhere. Gift certificates are available.

Workshop prices

According to the studio's website (October 2026): pottery one-to-one from UAH 600 for 1–2 hours; for two UAH 2,400 for 2 hours; for a group of 3 to 10, UAH 1,100 per participant. Pottery painting: one-to-one from UAH 900, for two from UAH 1,800, in a group UAH 850 per person (a mug or plate each). Prices may change, so confirm when booking.

Signature ceramics

Besides classes, Zirka z Neba makes its own hand-painted tableware: mugs called "Ancient Flowers" and "White Petals", mugs with fish or poppies (UAH 600–800), and plates with tulips, poppies or koi carp (about UAH 900). It's a lovely handmade souvenir of Lviv, far more interesting than mass-produced magnets. Pottery has deep roots in Galicia — pottery centres have long worked around Lviv and clay ware was part of every household — and the studio reinterprets this tradition in a modern way, even offering classes in painting inspired by ancient Trypillian ceramics.
