Church of St. George, Uzhhorod
St. George's Church is a magnificent work of architectural art that has been preserved in Uzhhorod since the early 17th century. It is a Roman Catholic church that was fully restored in the mid-90s of the 20th century.
The beautiful building was created in a mixed Baroque and Neo-Baroque style. In the 18th century, it was rebuilt and decorated in a new way by the heir to the city government, Bercheni, who was an outstanding master of applied arts. It is his handiwork that can be seen in the paintings of the church hall. A unique iconostasis, marble walls and colored mosaic windows have also survived here.
What to look for inside St. George's Church
An important feature of the ancient building is a large round clock with Roman numerals. They have been accurately telling time for the past 150 years. This priceless relic can be seen from several sides of the tower, with a single mechanism embedded in three synchronized dials.
Sometimes locals and historical sources mention the church under the name of St. George, which is due to the foreign sound of the name. In Slavic countries, St. George was often called Yurii, which is more in tune with Orthodox names.
If you come to Uzhhorod in the spring, you should definitely walk from the church down to the river to Nezalezhnist embankment. There is the famous Sakura Alley, which is famous all over Europe and is an incredible sight.
