Church of Christ the Savior, Uzhhorod

The Cyril and Methodius Cathedral is also known as the Exaltation of the Holy Cross or the Church of Christ the Savior. The uniqueness of the name lies in the division into the upper and lower churches.

The Exaltation of the Holy Cross is the lower church, with a vault height of 6 meters, and the upper one is the Church of the Savior, with a height of 36 meters. The cathedral is crowned with a gilded 8-meter cross, weighing over 500 kilograms. The church building rises to the heavens at a height of 60 meters at its highest point, making it noticeable from almost any part of the city.

The cathedral can accommodate over 5000 parishioners simultaneously on two tiers, with a total area of more than 500 square meters. This majestic and unique building, created in the modern history of the Orthodox Church, resembles the Moscow Cathedral of Christ the Savior, whose appearance served as the basis for the architectural project of the Cathedral of Cyril and Methodius.

The construction of the church began in the 1990s when the old cathedral was transferred to the Greek Catholic community, and was completed in 2000. The rector of the church is Dmytro Sydor — a priest of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate), a Rusyn public figure, and the head of the "Assembly of Subcarpathian Rusyns," who was previously convicted for separatism. The height of the church is about 60 meters. The church itself consists of two parts — the lower part, the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, with a height of about 6 meters, and the upper part, the Church of the Savior, with a height of about 36 meters. The church has a conference hall designed for 300 people and a charity canteen that can accommodate up to 100 people.

The first significant date in the life of the church is September 27, 2000, the date of the beginning of services and the consecration of the site for the future construction of the monument to Cyril and Methodius. Previously, a museum of church books and icons was opened in the church building.

The church is located in the square of the same name, practically in the center of the city at the intersection of Mynaiskyi Street and Svobody Avenue. The cathedral can be reached by public transport without transfer from almost all districts of the city, making the church not only one of the revered places but also accessible to parishioners.

Not far from the cathedral is another less noticeable landmark of the city, but it harmoniously fits into the modern development, making it quite difficult to pay attention to it. An unnamed old house, built at the end of the 19th century, continues to remind the guests of the city of its long history and the events associated with it.
