Zvolen is a town in central Slovakia, serving as the administrative center of the Zvolen District in the Banská Bystrica Region. It is located at the confluence of the Hron and Slatina rivers, at the foot of the Javorie and Kremnické vrchy mountains, within the Western Carpathians. The town sits in the Zvolen Basin, surrounded by the Poľana, Kremnické vrchy, Javorie, and Štiavnické vrchy ranges, creating a scenic natural landscape.

The area of Zvolen has been inhabited since the Neolithic era. In the 6th century, Slavic tribes settled here, establishing a fortified settlement. After the fortress was destroyed by the Tatars in 1241, the settlement was moved to its current location. In 1243, King Béla IV granted Zvolen town rights, and it soon became the capital of a Hungarian county. Later, the town became a center of folk crafts and an important transport hub after the construction of the railway.

Zvolen is known for its historical landmarks, including Zvolen Castle, now part of the Slovak National Gallery, and the Pustý hrad (Old Zvolen Castle). The town is surrounded by rich nature—forests, rivers, the Môťová reservoir, and nearby spa areas such as Kováčová and Sliač. Traditional crafts are preserved here, notably bryndza cheese production in Zvolenská Slatina.

Visitors can enjoy numerous hiking trails, such as "Kalinka – Zvolen", "Zvolen, passenger station – Vrata saddle", and "Zvolen, Neresnica – Zaježová, crossroads". Zvolen Castle is a must-see, and the oldest bryndza dairy in Zvolenská Slatina (since 1797) is worth a visit. For relaxation, the thermal spa Kováčová with the Holidaypark aquapark and the Sliač spa with warm carbonated water are nearby.
