Zvolen Castle — Slovak National Gallery
Zvolen Castle (Zvolenský zámok, officially Zvolenský hrad) stands on a raised terrace at the southern end of SNP Square in the centre of Zvolen. It is one of Slovakia's finest Gothic castles and also a gallery: a branch of the Slovak National Gallery (SNG) runs a permanent exhibition of Gothic art and large temporary exhibitions here. The castle is a national cultural monument.
The old seat of power stood on a steep crag above the confluence of the Slatina and the Hron — today's Pustý hrad. Because it was so hard to reach, King Louis I of Anjou built a new hunting castle in 1360–1382, modelled on Italian town castelli. In 1382 it hosted the betrothal of his daughter Mary to Sigismund of Luxembourg. In 1440–1462 the castle belonged to one of the most powerful commanders in Hungary, John Jiskra of Brandýs; King Matthias Corvinus liked to visit with his wife Beatrice, who lived here as a widow from 1490. Around 1500 the Thurzó family surrounded the castle with walls and four round bastions; in the mid-16th century, under Ottoman pressure, a floor with loopholes and corner oriel turrets was added, and around 1590 an artillery bastion. The castle has kept its Renaissance appearance to this day; it was thoroughly restored in the 1960s.
What to see
- The "Gothic Art" exhibition (since 2022) — more than 80 sculptures and paintings from the 14th–16th centuries, unique in Slovakia for the number of works on show. It is a study collection of originals from the SNG holdings plus copies of the most famous works by Master Paul of Levoča, such as the "Last Supper". Among the works are a Madonna and Child of around 1340 by a carver from the mining towns and wall paintings of 1462–1470 from a burgher house in Zvolen.
- The castle chapel with Late Gothic features and a royal gallery, as well as the knights' hall.
- The 18th-century Baroque hall with a painted wooden coffered ceiling of 78 panels showing, in chronological order, Roman kings and Habsburg emperors up to Charles VI.
- The vaulted gateway with Gothic sedilia under carved arches and old frescoes, and the courtyard with a well and sculptures.
In 2026 the castle hosts the exhibition "Mohács 500", marking 500 years since the Battle of Mohács and the Ottoman presence in the region; the gallery regularly holds lectures, guided tours and school programmes.
Practical information
The castle is an easy walk from the railway and bus stations; the Poľana town bus stop is close by. Cars and coaches can use the paid car park right below the castle. The gallery is open Wednesday to Sunday and closed on Mondays and Tuesdays; last entry is half an hour before closing. Tickets are sold separately for each exhibition and the chapel (from €0 to €6); details are in the "At a glance" box.
The castle has a lift near the entrance gate, so the exhibitions are accessible to wheelchair users. You can leave a pushchair and use free lockers. Photography for private use is free. Animals, except guide dogs, are not allowed in the exhibitions. Allow 1.5–2 hours for a visit.
Nearby: trails and peaks
From the railway station, a few hundred metres from the castle, start the Zvolen, passenger station – Saddle Vráta trail and the shorter Zvolen passenger station loop — handy for a walk up into the woods above town after the gallery. Zvolen lies between the old mining towns, so it is easy to continue to Kremnica, home of the Museum of Coins and Medals and Town Castle, Kremnica, or to Banská Štiavnica with its Old Castle in Banská Štiavnica.
