Turia River

Turia River, Turi Remety

The Turia is a small mountain river in western Zakarpattia and a right tributary of the Uzh. It begins north-east of the Polonyna Rivna massif, where its upper course is called the Shypit, and flows through Turia Poliana, Turi Remety, Poroshkovo and Rakovo to Perechyn. There, not far from the town centre, the Turia joins the Uzh.

  • Length: 46 km
  • Basin area: 467 km²
  • Source: north-east of Polonyna Rivna
  • Mouth: the Uzh in Perechyn

In Turi Remety, see St Michael’s Church of 1771 and the Rozstoky woods, home to the tallest trees in Ukraine. In Perechyn you can walk to the confluence of the Turia and the Uzh and climb Lavender Hill.

The Turia is a trout river: its upper course, the Shypit, has been stocked with trout every year since 2019, and since 2025 fry have also been released into the Turia itself, together with grayling, which is in the Red Book. Slovak ichthyologists counted 16 fish species in the Turia. The spawning ban runs from 25 March to 15 May, and trout are closed from 10 October to 1 March. Details are in the fishing section. All the region’s waters are on the Fishing in the Carpathians page.
