Craft beer in the Carpathians
Mountain water, good malt and small family breweries — this is how Carpathian beer is made, the kind you won’t find in a supermarket. Private breweries work in Mykulychyn, Polianytsia and Verkhovyna, and in Transcarpathia in Uzhhorod, Mukachevo and Vyshkovo. They brew pale and dark lagers, wheat and unfiltered beers, IPAs and seasonal specials, and some also make kvass or mead.
Many breweries have their own pub or restaurant where the beer is poured straight from the tanks. Some run brewery tours and tastings of several styles, talk about the brewing process and sell bottled beer to take away together with local cheese, sausages and snacks.
Tip: brewery tours usually need booking, so call ahead. If you are driving, take some bottles with you to enjoy in the evening and choose the house kvass or lemonade for the road.
