Fishermen from all over Ukraine are looking for Volia Yakubova's village because they want to have a good comfortable vacation and feel a good fish on the hook. The village of Volia Yakubova is known not only in the Drohobych district and Drohobych, which is 10 km away, but throughout Lviv and western Ukraine. People come here even from other regions of Ukraine because the village's infrastructure is developing.

Volia Yakubova is bordered by Dobrivliany in the east, Bronytsia in the west, Sniatynka and Zaluzhany in the south, and Bykiv and Verkhnii Dorozhov in the north. The village stretches for several kilometers along the east-west line on the southern side of the road between Dobrivliany and Bronytsia. Along the village, a small stream Medvezhanka (formerly known as the Bronychany or Broncy stream) flows through a wide valley between two hills, which in Dobrivliany flows into Trudnytsia, a tributary of the Tysmenytsia. The highest point of the village is 321 m above sea level, the lowest is 278 m above sea level.

The origin of the village name

According to legend, the name of the village is associated with a wealthy merchant named Jakub, who lived in these neighborhoods many years ago. He had a lot of land, servants, and traded in oxen. Before his death, Jakub gave his servants land and let them go free. Hence the name of the village, Jakub's Will.

Drohobych writer Roman Pastukh offers another version. According to K. Tyshchenko, in the Avar times of the VI-VII centuries, the Yakovites actively moved along the "Vistula corridor" from the Baltic to Polissia and further south with a Christian mission. This is confirmed by the name Jakub, which is so widespread in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, and partly in Galicia, where dozens of place names with the base "Jakub" are recorded. Hence, it seems likely that the village name originated from the Jacobite missionaries. If it is confirmed, the village's foundation should be dated back at least one and a half thousand years.

The prehistoric man's life on the territory of the village several millennia BC is evidenced by the burial mound of the Corded Pottery culture on a wooded hill on the right bank of the Medvezhanka River, 1.2 km from the village.

The first written mention of the village dates back to 1340. At the beginning of the XVI century, there were 38 families in the village who ran a patriarchal household. Documents show that in 1515, 38 families lived in the village and there was already a church where the Divine Liturgy was held every Sunday and on holidays. The first written mention of the church dates back to 1507.

At the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the village was home to about 1,500 residents, all Ukrainians, except for one Jewish family that was engaged in farming. The village was home to the Artemovych, Blazhkevych, Didukh, Dmytrakh, Dorozhivskyi, Hrekh, Zhgut, Kinko, Kobryn, Krupiak, Kulyniak, Lekhush, Lopskyi, Matchak, Melnyk, Petsiuk, and Tanchuk families.

The Executive Committee of the Lviv Regional Council of People's Deputies returned the village to its original name, Volia Yakubova, by a decision of December 18, 1990. On October 13, 1994, a session of the Lviv Regional Council decided to establish the Volianske village council with its center in the village of Volia Yakubova, removing it from the jurisdiction of the Dobrivlia village council.

The direct road from Drohobych to Volia Yakubova via Sniatynka was restored.

In 2007, only 300 people lived in 180 houses in the village: 295 Ukrainians, 2 Armenians, 2 Russians, 1 Pole, including 126 pensioners. The villagers owned: 131 cows, 17 horses, 12 pigs, 670 poultry, 4 apiaries, 4 tractors, and 1 combine harvester. The primary (four-grade) school had 6 pupils, 2 teachers, including a foreign language teacher, and 1 technical worker. The village is connected to Drohobych by car and taxis.

On July 23, 2006, a monument to Colonel Andrii Melnyk was unveiled in the village. The author of this monument is a famous sculptor Petro Kulyk from Lviv. The opening ceremony was attended by the leaders of the Lviv region, the city of Drohobych, guests from abroad, from Kyiv, Lviv, and the western regions of Ukraine. Among them were Mykola Plavyuk, head of the OUN, Pavlo Dorozhynsky, head of the OUND, Oleh Tyahnybok, head of the Svoboda party, Atanas Kobryn (USA), surgeon Yosyp Blazhkevych (Lviv), and others.

The unveiling of the monument to the prominent politician in his native village took a long time. First, a memorial sign was erected in 1990 on the site of the leader's parental home, which is to be fully restored. At the initiative of Melnyk's relative, Atanas Kobryn, a memorial stele with an inscription was erected at the entrance to the village: "This memorial sign was erected in honor of the village of Volia Yakubova, which raised a prominent military and statesman of the Ukrainian People's Republic, one of the founders of the Ukrainian Military Organization, the longtime head of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, Colonel Andriy Melnyk."
