The summit hala of Veľká Rača, the highest peak of the Kysucké Beskydy

Veľká Rača, Klubina / Oščadnica (okres Čadca), CHKO Kysuce, slovensko-poľská hranica, Slovakia

Veľká Rača (Polish Wielka Racza, 1,236 m) is the highest mountain of the Kysucké Beskydy on the Slovak–Polish border, about 12 km east of the town of Čadca. The massif is forested, but on the summit itself lies a grassy hala – a rounded meadow with a wide panorama. Interestingly, according to Polish botanists this summit meadow was not made by people but is of natural origin, even though the natural upper tree line in this part of the Beskids runs about 150 m higher; the low, twisted beech wood around it is natural too. The border and the watershed between the Black Sea and the Baltic run along the crest of Rača, and the Slovak side belongs to the Kysuce Protected Landscape Area.

The mountain has long lived a pastoral life. Rača is first mentioned in 1417; in the mid-16th century Wallachians grazed their flocks here, and soon shepherds of the Budatín and Strečno estates were fighting bloody disputes over the pastures. One explanation of the name links it to the local word "rajczula" – a sheep pen. In the 17th–19th centuries outlaws hid in the forests, during the Second World War there was a gendarmerie post on the summit, and from 1999 to 2007 a pedestrian border crossing operated here. The Slovak slopes are protected by the Veľká Rača National Nature Reserve (since 1976), which preserves remnants of near-natural fir-spruce forest and the pseudokarst caves Malá and Veľká skalná diera, rare in Kysuce. Plants here include the small white orchid, willow gentian, Carpathian snowbell and martagon lily; animals include black grouse and lynx.

What to see and do

  • The summit hala. A broad grassy meadow with a cross and border stones; in autumn it is fringed with russet bilberry.
  • The viewing platform, built in 1997 jointly by Poles and Slovaks, lifts you above the trees: you see Krivánska Malá Fatra best, the Moravian-Silesian and Silesian Beskids, and in good weather the Orava Beskids, Oravská Magura and the Tatras.
  • The hut on the summit. Next to the summit, already on the Polish side, stands the PTTK "Wielka Racza" mountain hut; lower on the Slovak slopes is Chata na Rači.
  • Winter and summer. Below the summit on the Slovak side is the Oščadnica resort (three chairlifts), and the Kysuce ski trail leads cross-country skiers along the ridge.

How to get there

The easiest ascent is from the village of Oščadnica and its Dedovka recreation area: Slovak reference works call it undemanding, about 2 hours on foot. According to Polish signpost data, the route from Oščadnica past Chata na Rači takes 2 h 45 min up and 2 h 15 min down (Oščadnica, Vyšný koniec – Veľká Rača). Other routes: from Stará Bystrica and from Lodno (Lodno – Veľká Rača), from Polish Rycerka-Kolonia – 2 h (Rycerka Górna Kolonia – Wielka Racza) or from Zwardoń on the border via Magura – 4 h 45 min. It is a quiet hike on forest paths for families with older children; the climb is too steep for prams.

Season and safety

You can go all year: in summer and autumn across the meadow and bilberry, in winter on snowshoes or cross-country skis; the top is often foggy and windy, so take warm clothes. The Slovak side lies in the Kysuce Protected Landscape Area and the slopes in a national nature reserve, so keep to marked trails and do not pick plants. On the summit you cross a state border within the Schengen area – carry an ID document. Slovak Mountain Rescue – 18 300, in Poland GOPR 985. Information as of October 2026.

Nearby

About 10 km to the south-east is the Kysuce Village Museum and Forest Railway, Vychylovka; from the summit you can see the ridge of Malá Fatra with The hole of Malá Fatra.
