About

The Wielka Racza Hut stands on the glade just below the summit of Wielka Racza in the Żywiec Beskids, right by the Polish–Slovak border, at 1,236 m.

Private owners began a simple building here in 1933; the following year the Bielsko branch of the Polish Tatra Society bought the plot with the unfinished house, and on 17 December 1934 the hut welcomed its first guests. During the war it housed a Luftwaffe post, and in April 1945 it was hit by two artillery shells. Border-zone restrictions left it to decay for years; in 1964 a PTTK commission chose a major renovation over demolition, and in the 1990s a masonry wing was added to the wooden part.

There are about 50 beds and a buffet with a dining room. The Polish red and yellow trails and a Slovak green trail meet here: red from Zwardoń (about 5 h), yellow from Rycerka Górna and green from Oščadnica. Mountain rescue: 985 or +48 601 100 300.
