Havránok Archaeological Open-Air Museum, Liptovská Mara
Archeoskanzen Havránok is an open-air archaeological museum on a hill above the dam of the Liptovská Mara reservoir, about 2 km south of the village of Bobrovník, halfway between Ružomberok and Liptovský Mikuláš. It is run by the Liptov Museum in Ružomberok. Here, on the site of real excavations, a Celtic hillfort with a druid sanctuary and a medieval timber stronghold have been recreated, and from the top there is a wide view over the reservoir and the mountains of Liptov. Since 1967 Havránok has been a national cultural monument.
The construction of Liptovská Mara in the 1960s triggered one of the longest archaeological investigations in Slovak history: researchers rescued sites threatened by flooding and at the same time checked old reports of a settlement on Havránok. The hill's favourable position attracted people from prehistoric times. In the Late Iron Age a hillfort was built here, serving as a refuge in times of danger and protecting a sanctuary — still the only sanctuary ever found of the Púchov culture, which formed in Liptov under the influence of the arriving Celts. It was thanks to the excavations on Havránok, led by the archaeologist Karol Pieta, that this culture found its firm place in the history of settlement in northern Slovakia. In the 12th–15th centuries Slavs lived here; a timber manor stronghold with a palisade, ditch and residential tower stood here, and later a masonry church. The open-air museum was built from the early 1990s, and in 1995 the museum set up a permanent guide service here.
What to see
- The hillfort defences — stone walls, timber palisades and the entrance gate, preserved in their original place.
- The sanctuary with a sacrificial shaft and altar; remains of offerings, stone paths with a colonnade and Celtic imitations of ancient coins were found here.
- Reconstructed dwellings — log houses under thatched and timber roofs, simple refuge shelters on the hillfort and a farmstead, the basic unit of the settlements of the time. In building them, archaeologists used everything excavations across Liptov revealed: building technique, roofing, materials, layout and interior fittings.
- The medieval stronghold — remains of a 12th–15th-century timber manor fortification.
- The view over Liptovská Mara and the mountains around the Liptov basin.
The museum also includes the tower of the Church of the Virgin Mary in Liptovská Mara — an old village flooded by the reservoir; its exhibition can only be seen from outside, looking in.
Practical information
The open-air museum is open daily from May to October. By car, approach from Bobrovník; on foot, a red-marked trail leads here from Bobrovník (bus, about a 35-minute walk) or from Vlachy, which has a bus and a railway station (about 45 minutes). An adult ticket costs €4, children, students and seniors pay €2, and photography costs €1; other prices are in the "At a glance" box. Large groups are asked to announce themselves by phone in advance.
Allow about an hour for a visit, or half a day with the walk in. The grounds lie on a grassy hillside with earth paths, so they are hardly suitable for wheelchairs; comfortable shoes and sun protection will help. For children it is a living illustration of their history books, and in summer a walk with a view as well.

The Vlachy – Liptovský Castle trail passes the open-air museum: from the railway station at Vlachy it leads via Havránok up to the castle ruins on the summit — Liptov Castle (ruins). Below spreads the Liptovská Mara reservoir — its shores are a good place to rest after the climb.
