Wooden Gothic Church of All Saints, Tvrdošín

Cintorínska, 027 44 Tvrdošín, Slovakia

A Gothic log church in an old cemetery

The Wooden Gothic Church of All Saints (Kostol Všetkých svätých) stands in the cemetery of Tvrdošín in the Orava region, only a few dozen kilometres from the Polish border. It is the town's oldest building and one of the most valuable monuments of wooden church architecture in Slovakia. On 7 July 2008 it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List together with other wooden churches of the Slovak Carpathians, and earlier, in 1994, it received a Europa Nostra award for exemplary restoration. According to the town, it is the only church in Slovakia to hold both distinctions.

A parish in Tvrdošín is recorded as early as 1395, and the wooden church itself was built in the 15th century (sources give different dates, from the first to the second half of the century). It is made of red spruce logs. In 1650–1654, when the church was used by Protestants, it was remodelled in Renaissance style: a new south entrance with a Renaissance portal was cut and the interior was painted. A thorough restoration took place at the end of the 20th century.

What to see

From outside the church impresses with its steep shingle roof, an octagonal turret and a wide skirt roof running around the walls. Inside, much 17th-century decoration survives:

  • the coffered nave ceiling with 49 rosettes and paintings of wild and garden flowers (1653–1654);
  • the presbytery vault with a starry sky and figures of the evangelists;
  • a late-Baroque high altar from the end of the 17th century with a painting of All Saints;
  • a pulpit of 1654 with figures of the four evangelists, and a painting of St George on horseback fighting the dragon (around 1653).

Part of the original Gothic furnishings ended up in a museum in Budapest after the First World War. The cemetery is enclosed by a wall with a Baroque gate under a shingle roof, and among the graves is a Renaissance stone slab of 1555. The church is small and a visit takes 20–30 minutes, so it is easy to combine with other Orava sights.

Curiously, the church has a 1:25 scale model — it stands in the miniature park in the village of Podolie in western Slovakia, and in 2008 it represented the country at a meeting of European miniature parks in Germany. Weddings can also be held in the wooden church. If you have an hour to spare, walk up above the town to the Skalka prayer site below Javorový vrch: a statue of the Virgin Mary stands in the rock, and from there you can see the whole of Tvrdošín and the peaks of the Western Tatras.
