Saint Nicholas Estate, Pistyn

Pistyn, Ivano-Frankivsk region, Ukraine

The Saint Nicholas Estate is a fairy-tale manor in the forest on the edge of Pistyn village in the Kosiv area, where — as children will assure you — Saint Nicholas himself lives. This recreational and environmental education centre was created by the Hutsulshchyna National Nature Park: the idea was born in 2002 and the estate has welcomed visitors since 2003. The centrepiece is a large wooden house in Hutsul style with a tower, carved balconies and a veranda. It is rated 4.6 on Google Maps from more than 750 reviews and is one of the best-loved family spots in the Pokuttia-Bukovina Carpathians.

Inside Saint Nicholas’s house

A guided tour shows how the Wonderworker “lives”: his bedroom, parlour and study. The house hosts Saint Nicholas’s post office, which receives thousands of letters and drawings from children all over Ukraine every year; some are kept in an archive and shown to visitors. There is a room of Christmas and New Year decorations with tree ornaments and greeting cards from different eras, and a small nature room featuring animals of the Carpathian forests and plants from Ukraine’s Red Data Book. Tiled stoves, woollen lizhnyk blankets, woodcarving and works by local craftspeople decorate the interiors, so the estate also introduces Hutsul crafts.

Things to do with children

  • Meet Saint Nicholas — by prior arrangement; the magic peaks in November and December, but the estate is open all year.
  • Workshop — children decorate a Christmas ornament from a blank and take it home.
  • A letter to Saint Nicholas — write one and leave it at his post office.
  • Playground and sports ground — wooden swings, slides and climbing frames, wooden animal figures and little huts on the meadow.
  • Picnic — gazebos, tables and fire pits.
  • Nature trails — the “To Mount Klyfa” and “Along the Kamenystyi Ridge” trails start here, with legends of the outlaw Oleksa Dovbush and an ancient sanctuary.

Visitors recommend calling ahead to check whether Saint Nicholas will be in: on holidays he is very busy, and on weekdays meetings are usually arranged for groups. Even without a meeting, children enjoy exploring the house and running around the meadows, while adults rest in the quiet of the spruce forest.
