Varosh Cheese creamery, Mukachevo
Varosh Cheese is a small craft creamery in Mukachevo, listed by the Zakarpattia Regional Tourism and Resorts Department in its catalogue of local craft producers. The name comes from the Hungarian word «város», meaning «town»: the cheese is made not on a mountain pasture or a remote farmstead but right inside the city, in the Borok-Telep neighbourhood on Mykoly Krylova Street. In Zakarpattia, where cheese tradition rested for centuries on sheep's brynza and budz from shepherds' huts, an urban creamery working with European recipes is a telling sign of the region's new food wave.
Why look for Varosh Cheese
It is a stop for travellers building their own food map of Zakarpattia and wanting to take home something other than the usual brynza. The creamery is a small production business rather than a visitor attraction: sources do not confirm tours or regular tastings, although in 2021 the creamery did invite its followers to a tasting. Its social media pages were last updated several years ago, so be sure to call before you go: check whether production is still running, which cheeses are available and whether you can collect an order on site. Varosh Cheese products used to be sold at the Mukachevo cheese shop «Milky Way» as well — ask about availability there in advance too.
What to try and buy
The range is small but well thought out — mostly European-style cheeses adapted to Zakarpattia milk:
- gouda — a classic semi-hard cheese matured for several weeks, a good match for the local white wine;
- halloumi for the grill that keeps its shape in the pan — a smart choice for a picnic in the mountains;
- spiced chèvre in oil, in jars, plus a soft processed cheese suitable for fondue;
- «Zamamber» — a Zakarpattia take on camembert with a white rind, a delicate creamy taste and a mushroomy note.
Sweets are a separate line: the creamery makes zefir and fruit jellies, which is why its Instagram bio reads «craft cheeses and sweets». Cheese, zefir and a bottle of Berehove wine make an easy food gift from Zakarpattia.
A travel tip: semi-hard and aged cheeses such as gouda cope with the journey far better than soft white-rind cheeses, so if you still have several days on the road, buy the soft varieties at the end of your trip and carry them in a cool bag.
