Cathedral of Christ the Savior, Uzhhorod
St. Cyril and Methodius Cathedral is also known as the Exaltation of the Cross Cathedral or the Church of Christ the Savior. The peculiarity of the name lies in its division into upper and lower churches.
The lower temple is the Church of the Exaltation of the Cross, whose vaults are 6 meters high, and the upper temple is the Church of the Savior, whose height is 36 meters. The cathedral is crowned with a gilded 8-meter cross that weighs more than 500 kilograms. The church building rises to the heavens to a height of 60 meters at its highest point, making it visible from almost any part of the city.
The cathedral can simultaneously accommodate more than 5,000 parishioners on two tiers with a total area of more than 500 square meters. The majestic and unique building created in the modern history of the Orthodox Church bears a resemblance to the Moscow Cathedral of Christ the Savior, whose appearance became the basis for the architectural design of the Cathedral of Cyril and Methodius.
The construction of the church began in the 90s of the last century, when the old cathedral was transferred to the Greek Catholiccommunity, and was completed in 2000. The rector of the church is Dmytro Sydor, a priest of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate), a Rusyn public figure, and head of the "Council of Subcarpathian Rusyns," who was previously convicted of separatism. The height of the church is about 60 meters. The church itself consists of two parts: the lower part, the Exaltation of the Cross Church, which is about 6 meters high, and the upper part, the Savior's Church, which is about 36 meters high. The church has a conference hall for 300 people and a charity canteen that can accommodate up to 100 people.
The first significant date in the life of the church was September 27, 2000, the date of the beginning of services and the consecration of the site of the future construction of the monument to Cyril and Methodius. Earlier, a museum of church books and icons was opened in the church building.
The church is located on the square of the same name, almost in the center of the city at the intersection of Mynaiska Street and Svobody Avenue. The cathedral can be reached by public transport from almost all districts of the city, making it not only one of the most revered places, but also accessible to parishioners.
Not far from the cathedral is another less visible landmark of the city, but it harmoniously blends in with the modern buildings and is difficult to ignore. An unnamed old house, built in the late 19th century, continues to remind visitors of the city's long history and related events.
