Morskie Oko
The most famous lake in the Polish Tatras
Morskie Oko (“Eye of the Sea”) is a glacial lake in the Rybi Potok Valley at 1,395 m, at the foot of the Mięguszowieckie peaks. According to TPN it measures about 860 × 560 m, covers 34.5 ha and is up to 50.8 m deep — the largest lake on the Polish side of the Tatras. Above the dark green water rise the Mięguszowieckie peaks and Cubryna; a little to the left you can see Rysy, Poland's highest mountain, and on the right the sharp spire of Mnich.
Highlanders once called the lake the White Pond, and also the Fish Pond: it is the only lake in the Polish Tatras where fish (brown trout) lived naturally. The present name is a translation from German, and legends told of an underground link with the sea. The lake has a political history too: the centuries-old dispute between Galicia and Hungary over this land was settled by an arbitration court in Graz on 13 September 1902 in favour of Galicia, where Professor Oswald Balzer argued the Polish case. The road completed that same year, 1902, bears his name.
What to see and do
- Walk round the lake — the path is about 2.5 km and takes roughly an hour (when there is no snow), passing scree cones, waterfalls from the upper valley steps, stone pines and spruces.
- The PTTK hut at Morskie Oko on the moraine ridge, built in 1908 in the Zakopane style, and next to it the “Old Hut”, a former carriage house from 1891.
- Wodogrzmoty Mickiewicza halfway up and the stone bridge of 1900.
- For experienced hikers — the climb to Czarny Staw pod Rysami, and via the Valley of Five Lakes to Wielki Staw Polski.
Practical information
The road. The walk starts at Palenica Białczańska (990 m), more than 20 km from Zakopane. From there it is about 8 km on asphalt, closed to cars since the 1980s after landslides and to bicycles since 1998. TPN advises allowing at least 7 hours: about 2.5 hours each way and 2 hours at the lake. There are no litter bins on the route — take everything back with you.
Parking. Only holders of an e-ticket may enter the TPN car parks at Palenica Białczańska and Łysa Polana; buy it in advance at tpn.gov.pl or at the TPN information point in Zakopane (ul. Chałubińskiego 44). The online price is 36–75 zł depending on season and demand, and more on the day itself. Your space depends on arrival order: arrive before 8:00 to avoid traffic jams. TPN staff take cards only and never sell tickets informally — beware of fraudsters. In summer alternative car parks operate in Białka Tatrzańska, Bukowina Tatrzańska and near Zgorzelisko, with public transport from there. Private minibuses run from Zakopane to Palenica; buy tickets from the driver.
E-buses and horse carts. TPN e-buses run from Zakopane (ul. Chałubińskiego 42) and from Palenica to the Włosienica clearing, from where you walk to the lake; people with disabilities and their carers can ride free right up to the hut (booking required). Tickets are sold only online or at the TPN point, not by the driver. Since 1 September 2026, as a pilot, horse carts run only from Palenica to Wodogrzmoty Mickiewicza (about 2.9 km).
Rules. The TPN ticket costs 11 zł (easiest online or via QR code). Dogs are not allowed, not even in a bag, and must not be left in the car. Drones, scooters and bicycles are banned on the road. In winter avalanche gullies cross the road — check the avalanche bulletin.
