Bąkowo Zohylina Wyźnio Highland Tavern

ul. Piłsudskiego 28a, 34-500 Zakopane, Poland

Bąkowo Zohylina Wyźnio is a regional highland tavern in Zakopane housed in a wooden "szałas" (shepherd-hut-style building) with a view of the Tatras. The restaurant stands on the edge of the Tatra National Park buffer zone, below the Wielka Krokiew ski jump, yet in the heart of the town. Next to the building is a glade with grills and fire pits that guests can use on hot days and during open-air feasts. Zohylina also has a "younger sister", Bąkowo Zohylina Niźnio, on the same Piłsudskiego street, closer to Krupówki.

The tavern greets guests in the local highland dialect and promises dishes "the gazda knows from his great-grandfather's tales", together with the famous highland hospitality. The interior features log walls, an open hearth and heavy benches, and the building blends into the mountain landscape. The szałas seats up to 90 guests, the summer garden another 80, and parties of up to 250 can be held on the glade, so weddings and family celebrations are common here.

What to try

The menu combines classic Podhale cooking with a few signature dishes. The specialities highlighted on the home page are braised lamb shank on celery purée with a mildly spicy sauce and lamb haunch on a hot stone with herb sauce. The menu (as of October 2026) also has genuine highland classics:

  • kwaśnica on smoked ribs (sour cabbage soup) and Podhale żurek;
  • traditional moskol baked on a griddle with garlic butter and bryndza;
  • caramelised oscypek with lingonberry, ginger and pear preserve;
  • pierogi with bryndza, "Hałuski Gaździny" with wild mushrooms and oscypek, and placek zbójnicki (robber's potato pancake) with goulash;
  • mountain-stream trout and pork knuckle braised in beer;
  • regional spirits from the "Bąkowa piwniczka" cellar and highland tea.

To start you can order sourdough bread with lard and pickled cucumber, and for dessert fruit pierogi or warm apple pie. There is also a children's menu with broth, tomato soup and a cheese pancake. According to the restaurant, main courses take about 30 minutes.
