Villa Atma — Karol Szymanowski Museum

ul. Kasprusie 19, 34-500 Zakopane, Poland

Villa Atma is a small timber house on Kasprusie Street in Zakopane, home of one of the greatest Polish composers of the 20th century, Karol Szymanowski. For Ukrainian travellers there is a special link: Szymanowski was born in 1882 in Tymoshivka near Kyiv (today in Cherkasy region) and came to Zakopane as an established composer. Atma now houses the only museum dedicated to him, a branch of the National Museum in Kraków.

The villa was built in 1895 by a local highlander, Józef Kaspruś-Stoch, as a guesthouse in the Zakopane style. In 1925–1926 it was enlarged to its present form and named "Atma", a Sanskrit word meaning "soul". Szymanowski moved in in October 1930. In these rooms he completed and orchestrated the ballet "Harnasie", based on highland music, and wrote "Veni Creator", the "12 Kurpie Songs", the Second Violin Concerto, the "Litany to the Virgin Mary" and piano mazurkas. Writers, painters and musicians visited him here — Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz, Julian Tuwim, Witkacy, Zofia Stryjeńska, Artur Rubinstein and many others. It was the highland music of Podhale — its rhythms, songs and dances — that gave the composer a new musical language, and "Harnasie", a ballet about the leader of Tatra outlaws, carried Zakopane's name to Europe's stages. In 1935 the Kyiv-born dancer and choreographer Serge Lifar stayed at Atma while preparing the title role in "Harnasie" at the Paris Opera. In November 1935 the ailing Szymanowski left for treatment in Switzerland and never returned; he died in 1937.

The idea of a museum was put forward soon after his death, but it took decades to realise: in 1972–1974 a public committee led by Jerzy Waldorff raised the money to buy the villa, and the museum opened on 6 March 1976. In 2026 it celebrates its 50th anniversary. The house underwent a major renovation in 2011–2013.

What to see

The biographical exhibition fills the rooms of the villa. Its centrepiece is the composer's study, recreated from photographs and descriptions, with manuscripts, photographs and personal belongings; the other rooms evoke interwar Zakopane. A display case holds Szymanowski's decorations, and two portraits of him by Witkacy, which hung here until 1936, have returned to the villa. Chamber concerts take place in the piano room. The house is also interesting as architecture: carved gables, a glazed veranda and a shingle roof.

Practical information

Atma lies in a quiet part of the centre, about 300 m from the Tatra Museum's main building on Krupówki, so it is easy to reach on foot. Use the town's paid car parks. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00 and closed on Mondays. A standard ticket costs 18 zł, reduced 14 zł, and admission is free on Tuesdays. A visit takes about an hour; check the concert programme on the National Museum in Kraków website. The villa is small with narrow stairs, so access for wheelchair users is limited — ask in advance. Information as of October 2026.

Nearby

Close by are Krupówki Street and the Tatra Museum, and a few minutes' walk away the Pęksowy Brzyzek cemetery and Villa Koliba, where the Zakopane style began.
