Maria Pasta, Vylok
Maria Pasta is a Transcarpathian egg-pasta brand from Vylok, a settlement on the Tysa river right by the Hungarian border. It is listed among Zakarpattia's craft producers on the region's official tourism portal. Its hallmark is pasta made with fresh farm eggs, which give it a rich yellow colour, a firm bite and a delicate flavour that ordinary supermarket pasta lacks. There is also a separate low-cholesterol line for those watching their diet, and production is certified to the ISO 22000:2019 food-safety standard.
How to buy and why to try it
The producer does not advertise factory tours or tastings, so Maria Pasta is above all a tasty souvenir from the Berehove area. The pasta is sold, among others, through the Transcarpathian online shop Bravo Market on Prom.ua; ask by phone whether you can buy directly in Vylok. The packs are easy to spot thanks to the blue-and-white chequered design with the MARIA PASTA label. It is worth trying if you like home-made noodles: the ingredients are as simple as it gets — durum wheat flour, drinking water and whole eggs, with no colourings or flavourings.
What to buy: the range and the tradition
- thin and wide noodles — for broth and bakes;
- fine vermicelli — for light soups;
- elbows, snails, shells, spirals and rings — for dishes with cheese and sauces;
- alphabet pasta for kids.
Everything comes in 500 g packs. Home-made egg noodles have long been part of cooking in the Berehove area, where Ukrainian and Hungarian traditions meet. They go into chicken broth, are baked with cheese and bryndza, or served sweet with walnuts, poppy seeds or curd cheese, as Hungarian families do. Housewives once rolled out egg dough at home and dried the noodles on linen; craft pasta from Vylok lets you recreate that taste without the long work. Egg pasta cooks quickly and holds its shape, so it suits simple dishes with butter as well as rich sauces.
