Kráľova hoľa — mountain meadows of the Low Tatras

Kráľova hoľa, k. ú. Šumiac, okres Brezno (výstupy z Telgártu a Šumiaca), Slovakia

Kráľova hoľa (1,946 m) is a broad, treeless «hoľa» — a mountain meadow above the tree line — at the eastern end of the main ridge of the Low Tatras. It is the highest mountain of the eastern part of the range, which is named the Kráľovohoľské Tatry after it; it lies in the Low Tatras National Park above the villages of Šumiac and Telgárt in the Banská Bystrica Region. Together with Kriváň, Slovaks regard it as their «national» mountain: Ján Botto’s poem The Death of Jánošík opens with it, and the folk song Na Kráľovej holi («On the King’s Hoľa») is sung about it.

The slopes up to 1,500–1,550 m are covered with spruce forest; higher up on the northern slopes grows dwarf pine with bilberry and lingonberry, and the summit area itself is taken up by species-poor mountain grassland with boulder fields. It is this low grassy vegetation that opens up the all-round panorama. The forest on the massif was heavily felled in the early 19th century; in the second half of that century the forester Ludwig Greiner achieved the restoration of the tree line at its natural level of about 1,650 m. Major Slovak rivers rise below the mountain: the source of the Hnilec on the north-eastern slope (about 1,770 m), the Čierny Váh on the northern slope (about 1,680 m), and headwaters of the Hron on the south-eastern slopes.

The name is linked to legends about Hungarian kings: Béla IV is said to have hidden here from the Mongols (1241), and Matthias Corvinus to have dined after a hunt on a flat boulder, the «royal table». The scholar Matej Bel (18th century) is considered the first known visitor. During the Slovak National Uprising the partisan group «Jánošík» had shelters below the summit. Since 1960 a TV transmitter has stood on the top with a mast 131 m high according to Polish Wikipedia (137.5 m according to English Wikipedia); the building houses a mountain rescue station and a weather station.

What to see and do

  • The panorama. In good visibility you can see the High and Western Tatras, the Chočské vrchy, Malá Fatra, the Slovak Paradise, the Muránska planina and Poľana; Polish Wikipedia even mentions the Bieszczady and the Borzhava polonyna more than 220 km away. Romania’s Apuseni Mountains were photographed from here at over 300 km — the Slovak long-distance viewing record.
  • A ridge walk over the mountain meadows west to Stredná hoľa (1,876 m) — the start of one of the finest sections of the red SNP Heroes’ Trail.
  • The Kráľova skala rocks (1,690 m) on the south-eastern spur and the Snehová jama hollow on the route from Telgárt.
  • The best time is July–September; in autumn the meadows turn russet, and in winter the summit is completely snow-covered.

Getting there

The shortest routes come from the south, from Šumiac or neighbouring Telgárt: according to TASR they take more than three hours with up to 1,066 m of ascent. From Telgárt you follow the red SNP Heroes’ Trail or the green trail via Kráľova skala — Telgárt, Pension – Kráľova Hoľa. From Šumiac a blue route leads via Predné sedlo (1,451 m), where the year-round Chata pod Kráľovou hoľou stands; from the north-east there is the long blue route Spišské Bystré – Kráľova hoľa via Smrečinské sedlo, and from the north a green one from Liptovská Teplička. The partly paved road from Šumiac to the transmitter (11.5 km) is closed to cars and open only to cyclists. This is a real mountain hike, not a pushchair walk.

Season and safety

The summit lies in the Low Tatras National Park. Under the park rules (NAPANT, as of October 2026) dogs must be on a lead and muzzled, and within the national park proper you may walk the marked trails only from one hour after sunrise until one hour before sunset. NAPANT’s seasonal closures do not apply to the routes up Kráľova hoľa. The ridge is fully exposed to wind and fog, so bring warm clothes even in summer. The transmitter building has a small emergency shelter for hikers. Mountain Rescue Service — 18 300 or 112.

Nearby

To the south-east lie the Dobšinská Ice Cave and the Palcmanská Maša reservoir; to the north, the gorges of the Slovak Paradise, including Veľký Sokol. To the south, beyond the Hron valley, are Veľká lúka on the Muránska planina and Muráň Castle.
