Dobšinská Ice Cave
An ice kingdom beneath Duča Hill
Dobšinská Ice Cave (Dobšinská ľadová jaskyňa) is one of the most important ice caves in the world. Since 2000 it has been on the UNESCO World Natural Heritage list. What makes it remarkable is that the ice has survived here for thousands of years not high in the Alps, but at an altitude of only 920–950 m. The entrance lies on the northern slope of Duča Hill at 969 m, about 130 m above the floor of the Hnilec valley, on the south-western edge of Slovak Paradise National Park.
The cave is part of the Stratená Cave system. Its main chamber drops about 70 m below the entrance, so heavy cold air flows down in winter and stays trapped there in summer. The cave is 1,491 m long with a vertical range of 75 m. The ice covers 9,772 m², its volume exceeds 110,000 m³ and it is up to 26.5 m thick in the Great Hall. The ice creeps slowly deeper into the cave at 2–4 cm a year and is thought to renew itself completely over 1,700–2,000 years.
The cave was explored in 1870 by Eugen Ruffínyi and his companions, and as early as 1871 the town of Dobšiná opened it to visitors. Electric lighting was installed in 1887, making it one of the first electrically lit caves in the world. Skating in the Great Hall began in 1893 and public skating was allowed until 1946; in the 1950s the well-known Czechoslovak figure skater Karol Divín still trained here. Twelve species of bats have been recorded, and the cave is one of the most important bat hibernation sites in Central Europe.
What to see
The tour route is 515 m long and takes about 30 minutes. The highlights are the ice-filled Little and Great Halls, the Ruffínyi Corridor and the Collapsed Dome, with floor ice, frozen cascades, ice stalagmites and columns. The average temperature in the ice sections ranges from −3.9 to −0.2 °C, so even on a hot day you need warm clothes and shoes with a good grip, as steps and walkways can be wet.
Practical information
The cave lies between Poprad and Rožňava. By car it is 30 km from Poprad via Vernár, 40 km from Rožňava via Dobšiná and 60 km from Brezno. You park at the paid car park in the settlement of Dobšinská Ľadová Jaskyňa (€5 per day); from there a path of about 1 km with information boards climbs 130 m to the entrance, an easy walk of about 25 minutes. There is a bus stop, “Stratená, Dobšinská ľadová jaskyňa”, and a railway station, “Dobšinská ľadová jaskyňa”, nearby.
The cave can only be visited with a guide and only from 15 May to 15 September, Tuesday to Sunday. Bookings are not taken: tickets are sold on site and extra tours are added when it is busy. Prices in 2026: adults €14, children aged 4–15 €7, students and over-60s €13; photography without tripod or flash is free. A scheduled tour runs with at least 4 visitors. Take a short rest after the climb before going in, as the change in temperature is noticeable. The cave suits families with children who are steady on stairs; the route is not suitable for pushchairs or people with limited mobility.
Nearby
Dobšinská Cave combines well with other places in the Slovak Paradise: the Suchá Belá gorge with its ladders and waterfalls, or the Hornád Gorge. On the way south towards Rožňava, stop at Betliar Manor with its large park, and if you would like to see another UNESCO cave, head to the Ochtinská Aragonite Cave.
