Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker (top), Serednye Vodyane
The Church of St. Nicholas ("upper" or "upper") is a wooden church, a monument of folk architecture and monumental painting of the 15-18th centuries in the village of Serednie Vodyane, Rakhiv district, Zakarpattia region. Its log cabins are considered the oldest in Ukraine.
Built in 1428 (according to other sources, in the late 16th century), it is one of the oldest Transcarpathian churches of the Potysa group. In the 17th century, log cabins were added over the dome of all three parts of the building. Around 1760, the church was renovated and a frame tower with a hipped top was erected. The church was restored in 1968.
The church is wooden, three-dimensional, with an equally wide nave and narthex, with a faceted five-walled altar, built of oak beams. All the volumes are covered with a high gable roof and are covered with a cupola. Above the chancel is a tall tower covered with a strict tent, typical of many Maramoros churches. Two oak log cabins probably date back to 1428. A well-known researcher of wooden churches in Transcarpathia, M. Syrokhman, dates the superstructure over the log cabins to 1600. The roofs are covered with wooden shingles. Narrow Gothic arrow-shaped windows have been preserved on the south and north walls of the Babynets. An interesting feature is that the door is located on the southern façade.
The interior has a gilded carved iconostasis (18th century) and wall paintings, which are outstanding works of folk painting of the 17th century. The nave contains compositions on the themes of the Passion of the Lord, while the Babynka contains fragments of the Last Judgment and figures of saints, including a portrait of the church's curate, priest Nikor. The image of the Blessed Virgin Mary "The Sign" located on the vault is particularly monumental, painted in the traditions of folk decorative art.
The church is a unique monument of the Transcarpathian school of carpentry and, along with the painting, is one of the most accomplished works in Ukrainian monumental art.
