Church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit, Dovhe

In the Transcarpathian hinterland, one can sometimes see truly remarkable architectural structures of worship. This applies not only to ancient wooden churches, but also to modern ones, such as the Church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit in Dovhe.

This amazing building with a rather unusual name was built in 1999 in the style of postmodernism with elements of high-tech. It was erected on the site of an older building dating back to the 1920s that had fallen into disrepair during the years of Soviet rule.

The current building is very original. The bell tower, which is connected to the main space of the church and is its external dominant feature, is particularly noteworthy. It is painted in dark brown and has the shape of a high pyramid topped with a cross.

The main building of the church looks absolutely simple - no strange or unusual volumes. There is also no hint of Gothic. The interior of the church is laconic and quite traditional. Next door to this church is another rather unusual, though less original, Greek Catholic church of St. Elijah.

The Church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit is located at 13 Lesi Ukrainky Street in the small village of Dovhe. The building is located not far from the village's railway station, so it can be reached on foot. The village, in turn, can be reached by rail from Stryi (Lviv) or by bus from Svaliava or Khust.
