Selyski Bakery (Selyski Tistechka), Nyzhnie Selyshche

Nyzhnie Selyshche, Zakarpattia region, Ukraine

Selyski Bakery («Selyski Tistechka», literally “Selyshche pastries”) is a family bakery and patisserie in the village of Nyzhnie Selyshche near Khust. It is run by local entrepreneur Diana Hubal and sits right on the village’s main street. Bread and pastries are baked here every day, the counter is filled with small cakes and desserts, but the bakery is best known for its celebration cakes made to order: its pages show hundreds of cakes for children’s parties, weddings and anniversaries, decorated with cream, berries and figurines. The bakery is listed among Zakarpattia’s craft producers on the region’s official tourism portal, and its Instagram account has thousands of followers and well over a thousand posts — living proof that this village can do more than make cheese.

Why stop in Nyzhnie Selyshche

Nyzhnie Selyshche is one of the best-known “food villages” of Zakarpattia. Most travellers come for the cheese of the Selyska cheese dairy, and the bakery is a natural extension of such a trip: pick up fresh bread to go with the cheese, a pastry and a coffee to take away, or collect a cake you ordered in advance. Visitors’ reviews praise the friendly staff and tasty desserts, so it is a good stop on the way from Khust into the mountains. There are no production tours — this is a place to drop in, taste and buy.

What to try and buy

  • Celebration cakes to order — sponge cakes with whipped cream, fresh berries, macarons and themed decorations; agree on design and size well in advance.
  • Small cakes and desserts from the display — with coffee on the spot or to take away.
  • Bread and pastries — everyday bread, buns and sweet yeast baking.

Transcarpathian villages have a long confectionery tradition: for holidays people baked kalach loaves, kifli crescents, strudels and layered cakes, and a hostess who could make a beautiful cake for a wedding or christening was always held in high esteem. A modern village patisserie carries this tradition on, just in a more festive outfit.

Getting there

Nyzhnie Selyshche lies in the valley of the Rika river, about 15 km from Khust. By car, take the road from Khust towards Mizhhiria and turn off to Nyzhnie Selyshche — about 20 minutes. By public transport, the easiest option is a minibus from Khust bus station; Khust itself is served by trains and buses from Uzhhorod, Mukachevo and Lviv. If you are collecting a cake, agree on a pick-up time so it is fresh, and keep a cool spot in the car — cream decorations do not like the heat.
