Brown Bear Rehabilitation Centre, Synevyr National Park, Synevyrska Poliana

Synevyrska Poliana, Zakarpattia region, Ukraine

The Brown Bear Rehabilitation Centre of Synevyr National Nature Park is Ukraine’s largest refuge for bears that have suffered from cruel treatment. It has operated since 2011 in Synevyrska Poliana, in the valley between Mizhhiria and Lake Synevyr. Bears are brought here from travelling circuses, roadside «entertainment» venues and cramped private cages, or confiscated from smugglers. Around thirty animals live at the centre today. For anyone who wants to see brown bears in the Carpathians not in a zoo cage but in a forest, this is one of the most important places in Zakarpattia.

What this place is

The centre was built here for a reason: the landscape and climate of the Synevyr valley match the brown bear’s natural habitat. The enclosure covers about 12 hectares of mountain spruce forest with streams, pools and dens where the bears can hide, dig, bathe and hibernate. In the upper part there are separate sections for animals of different ages and health conditions. The whole area is surrounded by an electric fence.

Vets work with the bears: the animals are vaccinated, old injuries are treated, and each bear has its own diet. Despite their reputation as Ukraine’s largest predators, the bears get almost no meat here; their menu consists of apples, carrots, fish, bread and a little honey. Many of the residents spent years on a chain or in a tiny cage, so they can no longer be returned to the wild; the centre lets them live out their lives in conditions as close to nature as possible.

What to see and how to behave

Visitors walk along a path beside the fence, from which the bears are easy to see in the clearings and among the trees. Information boards tell the stories of individual animals: where they were rescued from and how they are adapting. Carved wooden bear sculptures stand along the path. A visit usually takes 30–60 minutes.

  • Do not feed the bears or throw anything over the fence: they are on a special diet and the fence is electrified.
  • Do not shout or bang on the fence; for many bears noise is linked to a painful past.
  • This is not an entertainment show but a place to explain to children why wild animals should not live in circuses and cages.
  • The bears are most active in the morning and towards evening; in winter some of them sleep in their dens.
