Bojnice Spa: thermal springs, pools and treatments
Bojnice Spa (Kúpele Bojnice) lies on the edge of the town of Bojnice, about 3 km from Prievidza, in the Upper Nitra basin – at the eastern foot of the Malá Magura range, at 297 m. The mountains shelter it on three sides, so the climate is mild: around 2,000 hours of sunshine a year and little fog. The resort's real treasure is its warm mineral springs rising from 1,200–1,500 m: nine boreholes deliver about 40 litres per second at 28 to 52 °C. One of Slovakia's best-known castles stands above the spa, so treatment is easily combined with a walk below its walls. The resort is run by the joint-stock company Kúpele Bojnice, a.s.
The hot springs were mentioned as early as 1113 in a charter of the Hungarian King Coloman as "fons fervidus" – a hot spring. The first baths were built in the first half of the 16th century by the castle owner Alex Thurzo, and in 1549 Juraj Werhner described them as pools of water at different temperatures. After Pavol Pálffy rebuilt them, a report of 1671 counted five pools under one roof. Around 1900 the last lord of the castle, Count Ján Pálffy, renovated the castle and the baths, and modern development began in the 1930s when the spa belonged to Ján Baťa. Bojnice received official spa-town status on 17 June 1959.
Mineral waters and natural resources
Bojnice water is a hydrogen-carbonate-sulphate calcium-magnesium hypotonic acratotherm: warm but only lightly mineralised (up to 760 mg of dissolved substances per litre), with a noticeable content of sulphur compounds, silicic and boric acid and many trace elements. According to the spa, the springs yield almost three million litres a day – more than the treatments need. The water is used mainly for bathing in pools and tubs, and also for drinking cures, which the spa recommends for urological and some metabolic disorders. The second natural resource is the climate of the basin itself.
What is treated
The spa's official list of indications covers musculoskeletal disorders (rheumatic and degenerative conditions, inflammatory ones including ankylosing spondylitis, low back pain, scoliosis, post-traumatic states and recovery after spinal and orthopaedic surgery), neurological disorders (after inflammation of the central and peripheral nervous system, after stroke, sciatica), gynaecological diseases, kidney and urinary-tract diseases, occupational diseases caused by vibration or overload, post-COVID syndrome, and oncological conditions related to these groups. A doctor sets the programme after an examination: bathing in three hyperthermal, three rehabilitation and two outdoor pools, pearl and whirlpool baths, massages, peat and parafango wraps, electro- and light therapy, oxygen therapy, exercise therapy and drinking cures. Visitors without a stay can book an outpatient cure (examination plus at least three treatments a day) or individual treatments from the price list.
Pools and wellness
Part of the pools is open to day visitors. The most popular is the Water World in the Turzov dom spa house (formerly Mier): a year-round 22 × 14 m outdoor pool with thermal water at 30–35 °C, the "green" mineral pool at about 32 °C with water features, the "yellow" hyperthermal pool at about 38 °C and a small sea-salt pool at 35–36 °C. Entry is from age 15 only. Next door, the Sauna World has a Finnish sauna, a herbal steam bath, a salt bath and a sanarium (a swimsuit-free zone). Families with children can use the historic Ján's Bath (Jánov kúpeľ), an 11 × 8 m pool at 34 °C with no age limit; it is closed on Tuesdays for disinfection. There is also an artificial salt cave, and the pools in the Bôrina and Martin houses open to the public in the evening.
Practical information
Prievidza is easiest to reach by bus or train; from there city bus No. 3 runs to the spa (terminus "Kúpele Bojnice"). Cars enter through the new gate opposite the Čajka swimming pool (Zámok a okolie 944); the old entrance from Opatovce nad Nitrou is for pedestrians. Tickets for the pools and sauna are sold at the Turzov dom reception. Allow 1–2 hours for bathing; the Water World costs from €11 per hour and Ján's Bath €9 for adults. In summer there can be queues at the Water World between 2 and 5 pm.
