Tysmenytsia is a city in Ivano-Frankivsk region, the center of Tysmenytsia district. It is located in the Stanislavivska Hollow above the Vorona River; it is a famous furrier center. Nowadays, the H18 Ivano-Frankivsk-Buchach-Ternopil highway passes through Tysmenytsia, part of the former state highway Berezhany-Monastyrysk-Stanyslaviv, which was also called the Berezhansky Trakt.

The first mention of Tysmenytsia is found in the Ipatiev Chronicle of 1143. In 1449, the town received Magdeburg rights and in the XV-XVII centuries, thanks to its favorable position on the trade route from Poland and Lviv to Bukovyna and Moldova, it became one of the most important craft and artistic centers of Prykarpattia.

In the sixteenth century, Armenians moved to Tysmenytsia and brought the secrets of furrier craftsmanship. Since then, Tysmenytsia has been known for its exquisite fur and leather goods. Nowadays, Tysmenytsia is home to the Tysmenytsia Fur Company and the Tikaferlux joint venture. These are large, modern enterprises equipped with new machinery that process rabbit, muskrat, marten, and mink skins and produce a wide range of fur products.

A significant part of the population is engaged in private furrier business and trade in fur products of own and imported production (the city center is densely dotted with fur shops). Agricultural activities are also an important source of income for the townspeople.

The parents of the world-famous psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud were born in Tysmenytsia.

Officially, on February 14, 1986, the urban-type settlement of Tysmenytsia was renamed into the city of district subordination Tysmenytsia, Ivano-Frankivsk region. It is a picturesque town with a rich history, but unfortunately, we don't know much about it. Few people know that Tysmenytsia has always been a town and was inhabited by burghers. Many of the noble families are still there today, but most of them are under different names.

The wooden Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (built in 1732, called Monastery Church by the locals because from 1732 to 1748 there was a monastery of the Basilian fathers), with preserved nineteenth-century paintings.
The wooden bell tower of the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary (1710), an example of Hutsul architecture, is a rectangular church at the base.

Since 1992, the Stepan Havryliuk Museum of Tysmenytsia History has been operating.

The main cultural centers of the city are the district house of culture, the Tysmenytsia district library, and the district library for children, which is located in the former Polish house "Sokil".On January 1, 1978, a centralized library system was established, which included 49 branches of village libraries, 2 township libraries (Lysets and Zhovten), 3 children's libraries (Tysmenytsia, Lysets, Zhovten), and 1 central district library.
