Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, Tysmenytsia

The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, built in 1736, is located in the historical area of Tysmenytsia. The church belongs to the cross-domed type of buildings. It is built entirely of wood in the old Hutsul style.

All the log cabins of this one-domed church have a five-walled structure and several faces. The church narthex is made in a rectangular shape. The temple has a tent ending. The first tier of the building is made of chopped timber on the east and frame on the west, while the upper tiers of the church are covered with tin. The third church tier is represented by an elegant arcade-gallery. Not far from the church is a wooden three-tiered bell tower, which also dates back to the 18th century. The approximate date of its reconstruction is 1801.

The interior walls of the church are decorated with numerous paintings by 19th century masters. Of the interior decoration of the church, an iconostasis made in the Baroque-Renaissance style has survived to this day . According to some researchers, it has existed in the church since its foundation.

During the construction of the church, the craftsmen managed to embody the best traditions of artistic folk architecture of the Carpathian region of those times. Characteristic motifs can be traced in the combination of details, strict adherence to the norms in the construction of the church, and the beautiful contour of the building.

The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Tysmenytsia is one of the outstanding creations of masters who worked in the style of Hutsul folk architecture. It is one of the rare representatives of an amazing architectural and artistic ensemble among religious buildings. The church belongs to the Greek Catholic diocese.
